Our Learning & Engagement Manager @katy___sadler had a great day at @newdesigners in Islington yesterday, and saw a wealth of inspirational new graduate talent from across the UK. Here are some of her highlights:

1. @gsatextiles graduate Kirsten Harper @lonesometigress presents ‘Heirlooms’, an exquisite collection of hand embroidery work on preloved garments, incorporating unusual found objects and inspired by ideas of the historical relic and the archive.

2 & 3. @mcrschart Fine Art graduate @oliviamadlandshorter makes work connecting us back to the land, material origins and hand made processes, encouraging us to think about how things are made. Her swinging wool picker ‘Lyra’ is a functional sculpture, used for processing wool before carding and spinning, and is named after a pet rabbit that turned vicious.

4. @pfcstaffsuni graduate Zobiya Asif’s @zobs_designer_maker ‘Char Ki Kursi’ combines functional furniture design with storytelling, culture and community. The piece reflects her experience as a British Pakistani and blends traditional Pakistani influences with Western furniture aesthetics. A piece for gathering around, it transforms into a giant Ludo game.

5 & 6. University of Brighton @3d.design.and.craft graduate @daisybrookceramics piece ‘Beyond Time’, is a bold, ambitious and dynamic ceramic, kinetic sculpture. Made from 200 handmade ceramic tiles, the piece explores presence, experience and concepts of time through sound and movement.

7 & 8. @djcad_jewellery_metal graduate Sarah MacLeman @sarah_macl.art explores personal identity, specifically in relation to place and the history that can be traced through facial features and familial likeness. The back of her brooches is as beautiful as the front - the back of this brooch features a tiny photo of her granny.

9 & 10. @hcadesigncrafts graduate Ellie Gummery @studio_gummery has made a ceramic tea set - ‘Community’ - that draws parallels between ecological systems and human communities. Each component has its own woodland inspired characteristics, collectively working together to facilitate social connections inspired by nature’s example.

COMMUNITY

This collection of work explores woodland as a symbiotic community, drawing parallels between ecological systems and human communities. These teapots and cups represent woodland individuals across four seasons.

As social objects that facilitate gathering and connection, ‘Community’ invites users to reflect on the communities they belong to and how they have shaped them.

Went to the HCA degree show yesterday!
It was absolutely fantastic, every department put some fantastic work on display and went bigger than my lot last year; especially you guys in @hcafineart really impressive on scale and ambition, you guys smashed it!! 😁

Proud alumni here, really made me miss being a student there (I did spend 6 years at HCA so can you blame me), can't wait to see what these graduates do next.

We aren’t kidding

The reclaim process for us, isn’t just another job to do as technicians.

In our access for all studio, those that need another avenue to access other than cold hard cash, offer labour in return for access.

We train up time exchangers to act as soft technicians, soaking up labour to allow the big dawgs to focus on fixing kilns, planning courses, and dealing with day to day bits during the week

This split of workload allows us to run a smooth studio, for over 50 members, long courses, short courses, skills development courses, and more!

If you would be interested in alternative access in Hereford, or any of our pottery courses, just reach out or check out our website 😎
