Nothing more exciting than seeing a craft practice radically extended, and this is what Dee Clements (@studio_herron) has done with basketry. A graduate of the Cranbrook 3D design program, she’s making fantastically expressive, painterly vessels alongside other forms, which commune aesthetically with contemporary abstraction in other mediums. Clements will have a show in June at @ninajohnsongallery in Miami, one to watch out for, and has also shown with thefutureperfect. Thanks to her fellow Chicago genius @normanteaguedesignstudios for switching me on to this brilliant maker.

We’ve been following Dee Clements of @studio_herron’s career for a long time — from her gorgeous woven textiles to the rug she designed for Land of Nod (RIP) to her baby steps into basketry. But her work truly blossomed when she began working with @thefutureperfect during the pandemic. Her baskets grew in size and scope, mirroring both her personal and professional growth, and they began incorporating not only hand-dyed reeds but also painterly brushstrokes that hearken back to how Clements began her career: as a painter. When we were discussing Clements’s inclusion in this list, we said, “Bet she’s working on lighting next” — turns out we were right, and we can’t wait to see the results. ⁠

Tomorrow is my last day at The Cloud House Residency with @dreamsong.art .
I can’t believe it, but I was able to finish 3 works for an upcoming group show @thepitla .
I can’t even express how warm and welcoming folks have been to me here during my stay. Thank you all! Minneapolis is wonderful, I love this place and everyone I’ve spent time with here.❤️

And thanks to my new 6 year old friend, I now know about Fire Skinks, and how frogs can swallow with their eyes. Which are immeasurably cool things to know. Loved so much this little one’s immense knowledge of “aminals”.

Thank you @dreamsong.art and @rachelcolliermwa for having me this was incredibly special.

Join us at Dreamsong on Tuesday 9/29 at 5:30pm for a talk and open studio with Chicago-based artist Dee Clements, in Minneapolis for a residency with The Cloud House. Clements works in sculptural basketry, ceramics, and painting, with interests in ethnography, feminism, and craft. During her residency, she is focused on new sculptural paintings that explore decorative arts, nature, and the human impact on the planet.

Dee Clements work has been included in recent exhibitions at Museum of Craft and Design (San Francisco), Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, MI), Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami), Nina Johnson Gallery (Miami), R + CO (New York) and Kasmin (New York), among many other venues.

I haven’t been in the studio since April and I am beyond excited to be traveling to Minneapolis next week to start a residency at The Cloud House with @dreamsong.art . I will be OOO, don’t email me, haha. I can’t wait to make art again-I feel like a plant without water, baking under a scorching sun without studio time.

Also very excited to be sending my sculpture, No!, off this week to @dreamsong.art as well to be included in a group show titled Reversible Destiny, which open Oct. 15 and runs through Dec 15.

OBJECTS: USA

In 1969, the Smithsonian American Art Museum launched OBJECTS: USA, featuring more than 300 artists working across clay, enamel, fiber, glass, metal, mosaic, and wood. The exhibition went on to tour across the United States and Europe, bringing American studio craft to unprecedented public attention.

At MCD this fall, OBJECTS: USA returns in reimagined form, bringing historic and contemporary works by leading artists and designers into conversation. This presentation carries particular resonance in California, and especially in the Bay Area, which was central to the development of American studio craft and fostered generations of artists who challenged the prevailing hierarchies of their time. When the original exhibition opened in 1969, it reflected an unprecedented cultural breadth and made room for many artists working outside the dominant structures of the postwar art world.
More than fifty years later, OBJECTS: USA feels freshly charged. At a moment when new expressions of power and taste are gilding the nation’s self-image, it asks us to look closely at what we choose to value, and what those choices reveal about the culture we are building.

Organized in partnership with R & Company, a globally recognized design gallery based in New York, the exhibition features more than 80 works by pioneering figures

I’m unbelievably excited to announce a special exhibition I have been planning for over a year in collaboration with @mindysolomongallery !!

Interwoven: Basketry as Expanded Practice will open November 29, 2026 to kick off Miami Art week! Featuring the brilliant works of 20 artists from around the globe expanding the language of basketry.
