dollop is a new independent, print-only, non-profit magazine that explores the intersections of culture and climate.

The illustrations in the first issue  are where the handcrafted quality of the project is possibly most obvious.

We sent our five illustrators, @ninaizycka, @sanso.banso, @_kajameyer_, @lilykongyuet and @piamelissalaroche, a color palette along with their briefs, and instead of fitting their drawings into a layout we had already designed, we designed each feature layout around what came back. The pages take their color from the artwork, so “The Dog of the South” is red, “What in the Natural World” is green, and “God’s Gardeners” takes a pink hue. It’s a slower way to make a magazine, but we believe that the results have created a world unto themselves in each feature.

Dollop out October 1st.

dollop is a new independent, print-only, non-profit magazine that explores the intersections of culture and climate.

Photographer @riverchad and stylist @mpearljones shot them in Brooklyn over a single day, art directed by @studioloutsis, to extend the world of dollop past the edges of the book creating still life compositions built from the material world of dollop issue 1.

Out October 1st.

dollop is a new independent, print-only, non-profit magazine that explores the intersections of culture and climate. In Issue One: Agriculture, texture became a throughline of the content: a Qing dynasty woodblock of a grain harvest, copper-etched intaglio wine maps by @enremilly, Venetian prints, even emotional texture, and culminating in a feature that follows fiber flax from its historical Lithuanian fields to modern Chinese looms.

This texture became a touchstone of the design, and was emphasized in everything from layout to physical production. It’s clear from the first touch that materials are important to us. The cover, which was silk screened with a vibrant illustration from Kaja Meyer and debossed with a wordmark designed by Andrew Burgess, is made from a linen-embossed, 350 gsm heavy-weight paper. The interior juxtaposes a rich paper base of crisp, 90gsm Munken Print White, made at a single mill on the west coast of Sweden with a slightly heavier 110gsm Glama Translucent vellum used to introduce each feature. The book was expertly offset printed and bound by Kopa in Lithuania.

Out October 1st.

dollop is a new independent, print-only, non-profit magazine that explores the intersections of culture and climate. Issue One: Agriculture has 12 features that span the globe and a range of subjects from the music of the Sahel and Siberian steppes, to a fight along the world’s longest fence in Australia and beyond to the oyster beds of the Gulf, the deep Peruvian Amazon, urban gardens in Hong Kong, cattle ranches in the Brazilian highlands, and a fine dining kitchen in a frigid and aging corner of Japan. The throughline is a curiosity about our world and each feels like a celebration of something precious and handmade.

Fittingly, the design mirrors this ethos: we, in partnership with Studio Loutsis, have produced a 142-page book bursting with fine art, beautiful photography, and textured illustrations. Not content to relegate the world of dollop to digital printers, Studio Loutsis went as far as to incorporate vellum elements, with debossing and silkscreening on the cover (beautifully illustrated by Kaja Meyer and off-set printed by AB Kopa).

In issue one, climate and culture are the frame, but agriculture is the lens.

Out October 1st.

The middle gets a bad reputation.

But as designers of experiences, we’ve always known something critical: the middle is not a compromise. The middle is where meaning is made.

The most meaningful work doesn’t happen at the extremes. It’s where ideas converge. Where client vision meets user need. Where culture meets place. Where technology meets humanity. Where competing priorities sharpen our thinking—and where creativity emerges when we resist easy answers.

That’s why this year’s SEGD Conference Experience theme is Meet Me in the Middle.

This October 22–24, we’re gathering in Kansas City—not just because it’s the geographic heart of the country, but because it embodies convergence. It’s a place where craft meets innovation, history meets reinvention, and local stories create global impact.

Together, we’ll explore how experiential design helps us navigate complexity, embrace productive tension, and create meaningful connections through inspiring speakers, immersive tours, hands-on workshops, NEXPO, and the conversations that only happen when this community comes together.

We’re honored to have this year’s conference guided by an extraordinary leadership team:

• Rick Smith, Vice President of Experiential Design, Dimensional Innovations
• Wendy Manning, Managing Principal, Demeter Strategy Design
• Jackie Berra, Founder & Brand Experience Director, JBerra Consulting & Design

Along with the support of Kansas City Chapter Chairs Kate Schmidt and Sarah Onken.

A special thank you to our brand design partner, Studio Loutsis (@studio_loutsis) for bringing this year’s theme to life, and to our Presenting Sponsors, Color-Ad, Inc. (@color_ad_inc) and Nanolumens (@nanolumens_led), for helping make this experience possible.

This is where our profession comes together to challenge one another, sharpen our thinking, and imagine what’s next.

Early registration is now open. Lock in the best rate, reserve your hotel, and start planning your trip to Kansas City. We’ll see you in October!!

Studio Loutsis partnered with @christopherhawthorne at Yale School of Architecture to design Real: Restaging Criticism, a publication emerging from Christopher Hawthorne’s Spring 2025 seminar exploring what it means for architecture to be “real” in an era shaped by digital simulation, reproduction, and mediated experience. Inspired by the book’s themes of authenticity, illusion, and representation, we developed a visual system that introduces moments of disruption through glitch-derived typography. The result is a publication that invites readers to look a little closer and question how architecture is experienced, represented, and understood today.

Thanks @christopherhawthorne and @c_____hristina for the invitation!
