Today was a special day, @studio_oml and me started a new collaboration, let’s call it Scuderia Espresso, I handed over the first 4 vintage machines to Carl. 2 x la San Marco, La Marzocco, and a very cute Astoria. It’s up to Carl to decide what will happen, we share the same passion but I am getting old, let’s get in some fresh blood.
The very strange La Marzocco GS is in my car and a big thank you goes to Fabian from @lapotenza it is a “short” model in a strange colour with a different drip tray, something in between a Gs and a GS2.
Fabian thank you for the hospitality and thank you Carl for making it happen. From this post Carl will be taking over this journey.

The Olympia Express Maximatic has been in continuous production since 1974 — and it’s still the smallest dual-circuit (heat exchanger) espresso machine ever made.
Built by hand in Switzerland, its design has hardly changed in 50 years, which is why many call it the ultimate compact classic for home espresso.

This week we had another crazy time challenge. With this beautiful vintage E61 being just halfway through restoration we got asked if we can get it ready in 2 days so it could be picked up by friends of our customer in Berlin. We had just received the frame from recoating so we accepted the challenge. I did not sleep much but the result was very much worth it.
The E61 is a great machine for anyone interested in using a vintage machine at home, in the office or the restaurant.
We always have these available on request, feel free to get in touch. (Waiting time at @studio_oml is around 4-5 months right now, thanks to all the people trusting our work)

Manche sammeln historische Espressomaschinen. Carl Eller bringt sie zurück ins Leben. ☕

We have a very interesting patient this time.

Part of @henklangkempercollection we take a look at this strange looking vintage La Marzocco.

Is it original, is it custom? Who do you think built this machine and what’s its story?

This is a very special machine from @henklangkempercollection

He bought it from Enrico Maltoni, who found it in Pian di San Bartolo — the small village where La Marzocco was founded.

Before the purchase, Henk examined photos of the internals together with Paul Pratt, one of the most knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to vintage espresso machines.
Looking closely at the wiring and construction, he was convinced: this was an original Marzocco.
But why had no one ever heard of it?

After the purchase, Henk brought photos of the machine to the factory and showed them to Piero Bambi, who initially said that this machine could not be a La Marzocco.

On his next visit, however, someone inside the factory took him aside and showed him a one-group machine kept in a cupboard — built by his father.
Same construction. Same brass parts. Same details.
According to him, only three of these machines were ever made — and one of them is this one.

I’m restoring it now — not just a machine, but a piece of espresso history that was never officially recorded.

Found this Eterna caffettiera napoletana, or cuccumella — a wonderfully simple way of making coffee that predates the Bialetti Moka by more than a century.

Despite becoming closely associated with Naples, the basic design originated in France in 1819. Unlike a Moka, there is no steam pressure pushing water through the coffee. The water is brought to the boil, then the entire pot is flipped over. From there, gravity slowly pulls the hot water through the ground coffee and into the serving chamber.

It is essentially a stovetop gravity brewer disguised as a rather strange piece of cookware.

Eterna makes the find particularly interesting. The name was already being used for coffee equipment in Pavia during the 1920s, initially in connection with Società Anonima WATT and coffee-machine patents by Angelo Torriani. By 1929 Eterna espresso machines were being advertised at the Milan trade fair, making it one of the lesser-known names from the early history of Italian coffee-machine manufacturing.

The important distinction: this particular Eterna pot is not necessarily older than the Moka Express, introduced in 1933. The cuccumella as a brewing system is.

A small surviving piece of the history that came before the Moka became synonymous with Italian coffee at home.

La Tarvisium, a very rare tiny spring lever espresso machine from Treviso. Mounted on a marble plate (as a counterweight for the lever I assume)

Have you ever seen this before? Would you like to add this to your collection?
