You are invited to: ‘A Creative Assembly’ 🌳✨ An informal gathering using the (African) Kitchen Stool to explore intersections of material culture, spatial thinking & creative practice.

As part of the @londonfestivalofarchitecture, framed around this year’s theme of belonging, the event invites attendees to sit together on equal footing, questioning formal speaker-audience structures and drawing on diasporic, non-Western ways of gathering.

The event is grounded in BFA’s MA Research Project, spanning recent work in London, ‘Earth, Memory, and the Spaces We Inhabit’, and Accra, ‘Women’s Ways of Knowing in the City’, as well as future ambitions in creative and making practices.

In April, I ran two masterclass sessions in Rammed earth making at UCL’s Institute of Making, Stratford.

The students who attended came from a range of disciplines, not just architecture (The Bartlett), but also science to conservation. The Institute is a multidisciplinary workshop with open access for UCL students and a materials research library.

The process of ‘rammed earth’ uses soil mixtures and compression to create visually striking, locally sourced building materials. The sessions included a presentation of my research samples into sustainable building practices.

Participants gained an understanding of both the structural integrity and aesthetic potential of the technique, and explored its practical applications in design and construction.

To make the day more enjoyable, I created a series of colourful moulds helped along the beautiful weather.

I would like to thank the UCL technical staff for supporting me in these sessions, and also Liza Mackenzie for this opportunity.

New exhibition - Dorich House Museum: The Raw Origins of a Diaspora: Part Two is a new exhibition by Angela Ford that will be on display at Dorich House Museum until Saturday 26th July.

📸News flash: 🪴🍷 Garden Party on Saturday, 21 Jun, 1pm -5pm. I will be also doing a talk💫✨Free🌱

The work investigates raw materials from a decolonial perspective. Creating a series of artefacts that reflect the untold histories and
migrations of the Jamaican diaspora
through the artist’s personal DNA, the work links Jamaican cultural practices to West African heritage.

The Raw Origins of a Diaspora: Part One was exhibited at the V&A, South Kensington as part of the V&A’s Emerging Designer Commission: Origins, which explored the meaning of origins through material investigations and contemporary design practice as part of London Design Festival in 2024.

This new exhibition includes material
research from Jamaican medicinal herbs and the traditional practice of using herbs from African ancestors’ collective wisdom preserved in the Windrush generation of Ford’s parents. It also includes African vintage salvaged fabrics over 25 years of age and the Jamaicans National bandana fabric.

Free for all 🎟

Exhibition day 🌱 @chardaehylton_ and I planned developments for the evening show, with help from the students, followed by my final lecture of the day on architectural modelmaking.

The experience in Jamaica was just amazing, It felt incredible to return and volunteer my expertise. Last year, I had the honour of exhibiting at the V&A museum, showcasing “The Raw Origins of a Diaspora” a project exploring my identity and origins through materiality and artefacts. Returning to my parents’ homeland to work with the soil where they were raised by my grandparents was deeply meaningful.

It was a true honour to take part in this cultural exchange through making alongside such talented, dedicated, and hardworking students, staff and @nextgenerationarchitecture for making these connections possible. NGA for giving me this platform and having confidence in me to lead.

A huge shout-out to all the students who attended the four-day session and contributed to the discussions. To those who popped in, asked questions, or joined a taster session- thank you for your curiosity!

🎓🇯🇲 I wish you all the best in your studies and your future in architecture.

Day 3 of the Cultural Exchange:
An introduction into architectural plaster casting, and mould-making, using re-used materials.

Today, the students continued with their rammed earth casting and gathered more soil samples to display at the exhibition. Some of the samples were collected from Watermount, St Catherine, Mandeville,
Hellshire, and Kingston. It’s amazing how varied the collection was - Jamaica’s rich, fertile soil is perfect for agriculture, and the iconic “red dirt” you often see is bauxite, used in the production of aluminium.

Later in the afternoon, the students began sketching their African influence patterns, ready to create moulds for plaster casting. As a casting and mould specialist, I gave a studio demonstration on the process.

@chardaehylton_ and I wrapped up the day feeling a mix of excitement and restlessness; tomorrow is our final day with the students and the much-anticipated evening exhibition.

Evening lecture introducing the ancient building technique of rammed earth and the first-day workshop on mould making and rammed earth samples from different locations in Jamaica.

Upon arriving in Jamaica, Chardae @chardaehylton_ and I visited building merchants in Kingston to find materials for setting up our architectural workshops over the next four days.

I presented an evening lecture on carbon-negative building materials in construction, my practice Studio Raw Origins, and brought along material research and samples from my 2023 exhibition Hemp, Earth + Politics in the UK.

What is Rammed Earth? A bio-based, circular, natural alternative to concrete and traditional insulation materials.
Rammed earth structures are created by mixing soil with water to form a cohesive mixture, which is then compacted into a formwork mould using manual or pneumatic rammers.

Rammed earth walls are constructed by ramming a mixture of:
+Gravel
+Sand
+Silt
+Clay
+Water
= Rammed Earth

Due to location, sometimes a small amount of lime or cement is added to increase strength and durability.

Earlier this year, I was a guest lecturer at the Caribbean School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Jamaica 🎓, where I led a series of workshops on rammed earth and plaster casting as part of a cultural exchange collaboration between @studio_raw_origins and @nextgenerationarchitecture

I also delivered lectures based on my research into earth-based construction, hempcrete, sustainable materials, plaster casting and architectural model-making, ending with a group exhibition of students work with NGA.

Chardae Dacres-Hylton @chardaehylton_ an architect based in the UK and Jamaica, director of Acres Design. Alongside Next Generation Architecture co-founders, interior designer Jacqueline O.Yeboa @jacqweenline, they form a dynamic team supporting the next generation of architects through social advocacy.

Under NGA, Charade and Jacqueline have been nominated for the New Faces Award 2023, in recognition of their work in the UK. In 2023, they raised funds and secured sponsorship to provide 70 starter packs for first-year UTech students. Their efforts were featured in the Jamaican Gleaner as “The UK duo’s recycling plan to help young architects in Jamaica”.

This marked the start of an incredible journey in Kingston, Jamaica, filled with inspiring moments and a wonderful time spent with talented architecture and construction students, as well as UTech staff, who gave us a warm welcome to this cultural exchange in construction and research.

The Raw Origins of a Diaspora until 1 December 2024. Research in Jamaica.

The story of the Jamaican diaspora continues through the use of raw materials, including bronze and aluminium casts of tropical fruits and kola nuts grown in Jamaica. Many of these items have historical links and origins in West Africa, most likely dating back to the 18th century, when they were brought over on slave ships.

Ackee, the national fruit of Jamaica, is eaten as a savoury dish and grows both wild and cultivated throughout the island. Its original name in the Ghanaian Twi language is ankye.

Interestingly, Jamaica is one of the few places in the world where this fruit is eaten daily.

The ackee fruit (Blighia sapida) is toxic when unripe, but once fully ripe, it reveals a distinctive yellow flesh with a prominent black seed. The seed, along with its surrounding membrane, is removed before cooking. The flesh is then boiled and combined with salt fish (salt-cured cod) to create Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and saltfish, seasoned with fried onions, Scotch Bonnet peppers, spring onions, black pepper, and thyme. It is typically served with “hard food”—yams, roasted breadfruit, green bananas, fried or boiled dumplings, and fried plantain.

2-3. A kind store owner in Ocho Rios, at the street market, demonstrates how to clean ackee fruit.

4.Bronze ackee with bronze and aluminium cast Scotch Bonnet peppers.
