We are the Makers: Artisans and Artists. Final programming event for exhibition 'Black Atlantic Makers: Conversations', held at the Crafts Council, was aptly a conversation between practitioners working across ceramics, woodwork, textiles, lettering and outdoor art. Described by a Crafts Council board member as “my favourite London Craft Week event by a long way”, felt especially meaningful given we weren’t officially part of the LCW programme.

Makers, ranging from ceramicist Bisila Noha, stonemaker Marica Bennett-Male, weavers Doreen Gittens (@coinstreet_se1) & Makeba Lewis, woodworker Donald Baugh, Errol Donald, and multidisciplinary artist Angela Ford spoke freely about their individual practise, passions, but also rebellion and healing.

We heard the stories behind the works in the exhibition, the lived experience embedded in each piece. We understand them as expressions of identity and care from storytellers of material and memory.

My co-curator, Dr Stephen Knott, and I would urge you to visit the exhibition before it closes on 23 May 2026 at the Crafts Study Centre. I will be there on Friday 22 May.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to a space that felt open, generous and necessary including Tosin Adegoke, Keith Piper, Alvin Kofi, Jo Sealy, Ann-Aniedi Asikpo, MCIPR,UK, Birungi Kawooya, Ed Matthews-Gentle, Dr Mona Craven, Emma Jacobs and Natalie Melton.

I hope to continue to hold space as both practitioner and curator, where makers can feel seen, uplifted, and connected to each other.

Makers across materiality: from Dame Magdalene Odundo, Chancellor of University for the Creative Arts to woodturner Darren Appiagyei - represented at this very special opening of 'Black Atlantic Makers: Conversations' (Crafts Study Centre Museum)'. Delighted to premiere stunning new 'African Romans in Britain' tapestry, designed by Alvin Kofi.

Connecting makers across time: from Ronald Moody, part of the Caribbean Arts Movement to Keith Piper, co-founder of the Blk Art Movement is important. Thank you to Pallant House Gallery for the loan of Moody's very special 'Warrior', absorbing reflection on humanity's propensity for destruction.

Warm thank you to all the artists including seasoned artisan Donald Baugh, Angela Ford, who uses her dna as as the basis of her work, stone-maker Marcia Male-Bennett, ceramicist Bishila Nola, Jo Sealy and of course Rose Sinclair MBE FRSA and Deirdre Figueiredo MBE.

Exhibition programming begins with Rose's lecture about textiles icon Althea McNish on 10 March - booking details to be added soon.

Feminist, activist, author and artist Stella Dadzie said her father would be proud to be represented in the WW2 tapestry.

I designed a course module for London College of Communication, (University of the Arts)MA Journalism students in relation to the launch of the new African Romans tapestry - brilliant they could document by filming.

Pleasure to co-curate with CSC, Director Dr Stephen Knott. Thank you to my main funder Arts Council England and ongoing support and loan from Crafts Council. Thank you also to those who continue to support Tapestry of Black Britons including The Haberdashers' Company, Gary Stewart and Elizabeth Lynch MBE.
