I’ve spent years exploring the environmental impact of fashion and consumption. And paradoxically helping tech firms to help people shop.

Now, I’m digging deeper into what effect shopping has on our wellbeing.

Why does buying something new feel so good? Why do we keep searching for the next thing? And what happens when wellbeing itself becomes something we’re encouraged to buy?

In my latest article, I explore the neuroscience of shopping, dopamine, emotional regulation, consumer culture and why autism offers an important lens for understanding vulnerability in the digital age.

I’m curious, do you know what you’re buying into?

What’s so good about barre?

Apart from it being FUN, because you’re supported (by the barre) you can carry out movements that may usually be not accessible.

It’s something I’ve never expected before…

——-

In detail…

1. Isometric Hold (Static/Still)

Definition: An isometric hold involves contracting a muscle while maintaining a static position without any joint movement or change in muscle length.

Barre Application: Holding a position at the lowest, most challenging point of a movement (e.g., sitting at the lowest point of a squat or holding a calf raise at the top).

Feeling: The “shake” or “burn” is intense, and the muscle works harder as tendons start to relax, forcing the muscle to take over.

Benefits: Builds endurance, increases muscle strength at specific joint angles, and is very low-impact.

2. Time Under Tension (TUT)
Definition: TUT refers to the total amount of time a muscle is under strain during an entire set, regardless of whether it is moving or still.

Barre Application: In addition to holds, TUT includes small, controlled movements (pulses) or slow, intentional reps. For example, doing “10 slow calf raises” might take 45 seconds, providing high TUT.

Feeling: A sustained, deep fatigue and “burn” throughout the muscle group.

Benefits: Increases metabolic stress, which is a major driver of muscle hypertrophy (toning/defining).

Ever wondered why you love one Pilates studio but can’t settle in another?

I bet in part it has to do with the S E N S O R Y E X P E R I E N C E.

Think💭 light, sound, smell, texture, layout, flow in the space, number of people.

Now, imagine you’re someone who has sensory processing challenges. If you’re neurodivergent, autistic, or highly sensitive, these details can decide whether you feel safe enough to join a class — or come back again.

I’m currently deep in research mode digging into how we experience wellbeing, Pilates and fitness from a sensory perspective. It’s something I’m hugely passionate about. My son is autistic and I am also highly sensitive to sensory experiences.

I’d love to hear from you if you have experience of sensory processing challenges in fitness, gym, or studio setting either personally or as a fitness, Pilates or yoga teacher.

BYE BYE …You know when you’re on your last day of holiday and take those final photo, say bye bye holiday home…. Well that’s the kind of feeling I get just before the kids break up.

Saying, bye, bye @jamesshawpilates studio hopefully I’ll make it back before September!

It’s no secret that I’ve struggled with motherhood. The constant interruptions, putting your own life, fitness routine, work on the back burner. Constantly. Never feeling like you’re giving them or yourself the most of you/life. Just getting by. Extra layer on top having a kid with additional needs. Don’t get me wrong I love them, but it’s hard!

Income goes down by at least half not more tbh. Expenditure doubles. Alone time is rare. Especially if you’re job, like being a Pilates teacher is about being in a room full of other people giving them energy and support.

Anywaysss… moan over! Enjoy some nice pics now or feel free to have a moan too below 👇🏼 😎

One (of the many) reasons I love Pilates is because it kinda reminds me of horseriding. Brings back happy memories and also making new ones 💫

Bye, bye spot next to the sea 💙

DANCE YOUR STORY.

I was listing to this song in the car on the way into work to teach barre. I knew I needed to take a few mins to dance to those drums and that break.

I remember when I realised that some of the same kind of movements I’d been using at northern soul and mod nights could also be used in hip hop and break dancing. It’s like two worlds came together and a deep connection was made. Sounds simple now, that we have the internet etc, but in around 1996 this was a revelation for me.

Something I realised today is I don’t remember ever looking at myself in a mirror dancing like this, or taking a video. I mean dancefloors don’t have mirrors, lights are low and we didn’t really have phones, and certainly no camera phones. I didn’t have formal dance training, so again no mirrors. So it’s kinda interesting to see what the movements look like reflected back to you rather than what you think they look like in your head or how they feel.

I’m reading a great book at the moment about dance floors and how it shapes modern culture, more on that soon. However it’s definitely inspired me to explore my own dance story a bit and encourage others to find theirs too ✌🏼🤍

And no the video isn’t sped up 😂 and wow is it a lot more cardio effort than 20+ years ago!

How did you get such GLOWY skin?

That’s the question that I’ve been asked several times over the past couple of weeks.

And the answer is, it’s because of Sarah Toone’s expertise using Skin Pen.

I said to @sarahtooneskin I feel I need a good clean and polish, like a deep facial. She said, you’d see great benefits from @skinpen_uk

I really admire Sarah’s tenacity, and commitment to using the best tech, tools and science. She’s gone all in with Skin Pen, stripping back all her other clinic treatments in favour of this precision micro needing technique, and I can see why.

I didn’t expect after one treatment to see the results, for me, clear, smooth skin. Fine lines reduced around my eyes and even lips. Honestly I can’t wait for my next treatment in a couple of weeks.

I had derma rollering in Harley St years ago, and it was good, but rather painful, undefined and had a lot of downtime. This is effective, minimal downtime - I looked like I had sunburn for 24hrs - and made my skin noticeably glowy within 48hrs.

It also wasn’t painful, Sarah applied numbing cream and as you maybe able to hear in the video she asked me how I was doing (in terms of pain) on a scale of 1 to 10, and I said zero! Some parts (hairline) felt more like 3. Obv different people feel different levels of sensation and pain, but I have to say it was absolutely fine for me.

Any questions drop them below 👇🏼 and if I can’t answer them I’m sure Sarah can 👊🏼

Where’s your playground? ☝🏼

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped making time to play.

Play isn’t childish—it’s essential.

Making space for joyful, seemingly purposeless movement can be a powerful antidote to burnout and chronic stress.

🔒It helps regulate your nervous system through breath.
🔒It lifts your mood by shifting your focus away from stress.
🔒It strengthens your mind-body connection and supports cognitive function.
🔒It builds resilience, improving core strength, stability, and joint health.

Pilates reminds us that movement doesn’t always have to be about performance. Sometimes it’s simply about reconnecting with yourself through curiosity, play, and presence.

“We are never more fully alive, more completely ourselves, or more deeply engrossed in anything than when we are playing.” — Charles Schaefer

So, where’s your playground?

Sound on 🔉 🐘

I’m exploring a NEW (business) IDEA…

Nothing new there for anyone that knows me…

But I’m really having fun with this one!

Any guesses?

It’s something I wish I had as a Pilates teacher who’s constantly trying to teach myself…

and yes AI is involved and no it’s not replacing teachers, and it’s waaaayyy off yet!

DROP a comment below 👇🏼 I’m excited to hear your thoughts 💭
