#AHEADJournal Recently we visited the home and studio of Jessie Turner @____lil_j____ , an artist working mainly in textile and mixed media collage. On her walls are cyanotypes of leaves and fern fronds; large geometric posters, including a stunning monochrome of sheep in silhouette at Sea Ranch; a ceramic rock clock, which she hand-made to tell the time by pointing to stones; and whatever collages and crochet patterns she’s currently working on, all reflecting the natural and mystical dimensions of her work.

Many of Turner’s collages and crochet pieces suggest early herbariums and lapidaries, with the objects of study laid out on a single plane. In this her collage work is unusual because the cut-out components rarely overlap. Instead, each thing is given its own space.

The plinth provides a shared space for stone and flower.

The man-made form exists only in response to its organic counterpart.

The plinth’s contour repeats the rock’s unique outline.

Each piece is unique.

#ByStudioAHEAD Dining room of our Berkeley project, featuring the custom pendant light fixture designed by Studio AHEAD with an oversized shade and stem in wool felt combined with a metal ceiling plate in verdigris copper. A custom walnut table with legs made of client-own metal sculptures by Texan artist Jeffie Brewer.

Filled with a lifetime of curious objects, the house reflects a melting pot of influences from Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.

#AHEADJournal When looking at one of Ruth Charlotte Kneass’s @chiofchi mobiles, a few images come to mind. One is the eternal balance between sea and sky—and in fact, Kneass grew up on the coast of Northern California, into a family of boat builders, which surely influences the use of driftwood in so much of her work. Another is the way that assorted shells and wood can serendipitously wash ashore in perfect arrangements, needing only the human eye for appreciation. Images of falling leaves, sticks stuck in spider webs, or the planetary diagrams of the Hermeticists (who saw in the above all nature below) are also evoked.

All of this is to say that Kneass is attuned to the natural world, to the equilibrium of landscape, the poise of geologic formations. In addition to her mobiles, she has completed large marble sculptures, small wooden pieces, home goods, and other art objects.

#AHEADJournal During our recent trip to Morocco, we were able to spend some time at the Anou Cooperative @the.anou in Fes, an artisan-owned and operated collective of hundreds of weavers in and around the Atlas Mountains. As we mentally traced the zigzagging lines typically found in these carpets, we couldn’t help but connect them to our own community of weavers here in Northern California, and the rich cultural history they represent.

So we were more than happy this month to speak to Trav Meinolf @actionweaver , weaver, artist, teacher, founder of the Meinolf Weaving School in San Anselmo @meinolfweavingschool , and great bringer-together of people. For Trav, weaving has always been social, reflecting both the craft’s history as a communal activity and the earliest forms of the loom, which needed at least two people to operate.
