#AHEADJournal Recently we visited the home and studio of Jessie Turner @____lil_j____ , an artist working mainly in textile and mixed media collage. On her walls are cyanotypes of leaves and fern fronds; large geometric posters, including a stunning monochrome of sheep in silhouette at Sea Ranch; a ceramic rock clock, which she hand-made to tell the time by pointing to stones; and whatever collages and crochet patterns she’s currently working on, all reflecting the natural and mystical dimensions of her work.

Many of Turner’s collages and crochet pieces suggest early herbariums and lapidaries, with the objects of study laid out on a single plane. In this her collage work is unusual because the cut-out components rarely overlap. Instead, each thing is given its own space.

#ByStudioAHEAD Rock Plinth in brushed aluminum featuring a found stone from the Yuba River.

The plinth provides a shared space for stone and flower.

The man-made form exists only in response to its organic counterpart.

The plinth’s contour repeats the rock’s unique outline.

Each piece is unique.

The owner and driving force behind the new space, Alex Lauritzen @sprinkles_official , describes Passages’ aesthetic as a “medieval pub in the year 2500.”

CHERISHED.

The way I feel when I’m hosted by Homan as he shared his way of being and continues to shape @studioahead

•
Hospitality, virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through the ties of humanity.

.
🍊The cultural concept of Persian term for hospitality is mehmān-navāzī (مهمان‌نوازی), which translates directly to “guest-cherishing” or “fondness for guests”.

•
🛖 Mehmān (مهمان): Means “guest” or “visitor”. It traces back through Middle Persian (mehmān, meaning inhabitant or guest) to older Indo-Iranian roots associated with staying or lodging.

☕️Navāzī (نوازی): Derived from the verb navāztan (نواختن), meaning to caress, soothe, comfort, or treat with kindness and affection.

🏺Cultural Definition: Mehmān-navāzī defines hospitality not merely as a polite social chore, but as a deep moral duty, a spiritual honor, and an expression of profound generosity where a guest (mehmān) is treated with tender care (navāzī) as a cherished gift.
