Creating for earth. ✺
Natural dye studio & dye journal in collaboration with plants & place. Dyeing since 2017
by @luciamariebiondo
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Rose - the flower of love. Cultivated for over 1,000 years, used as a mythological symbol throughout countless cultures.

Using petals, already fallen in a bundle dye was such a fun variation for my usual preference for even colors. It will be fun to continue to play around with textures.

Building a relationship with a plant, and then using it for medicine, and furthermore for dyes, is such a different experience and something I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to continue to explore versus purchasing materials from a supplier. Connection with land for healing.

More to come on my musings with rose soon. by @studioazurra

As many of you may have heard, Studio Azurra was so excited, honored, and grateful, to partner with Remake, a phenomenal non-profit dedicated to just and sustainable fashion, to bring a three part series that gave students an opportunity to learn with natural dyes from the kitchen, from the garden, and from the wild this summer.

As a small-business owner, there is nothing that brings me more joy than cultivating a community of like-minded individuals who are just as passionate about creating for our Earth.

As excited as I was to host these classes, 2024 has posed a series of health-related challenges that have made it impossible for me to dedicate the time to these classes that they deserve to give you, my passionate and inspired supporters, an immersive and in-depth experience to learn the art of natural dyes.

With this in mind, I am saddened to announce that I have made the difficult decision to cancel the series, so that I can focus my energy and time into healing my body.

With this in mind - for the forseeable future, I will be taking a step back from Studio Azurra. This place, this conduit, this passion to create and to learn and to showcase the beauty of nature cannot exist without my being also bearing the necessary level of physical health.

For those of you that have already purchased a class, you should have gotten a refund notification from my store yesterday. You should see the credit on your account within 3-5 business days.

I am going to continue to post occasional dye projects here, and am always available for questions or comments about natural dyes.

Take care and be well - we cannot create without our health! 🌻

📣 SUMMER DYE CLASSES ARE NOW LIVE 📣

I’m so excited to share this partnered series with @remakeourworld! 💓✨

This series will feature three different courses:

🌿 DYES FROM THE KITCHEN 🌿

🌿 DYES FROM THR GARDEN 🌿

🌿 DYES FROM THE WILD 🌿

In these classes, we’ll:

✨Discuss different fiber types and how this can affect your final result
✨Review mordanting and the different types that can alter your dyes
✨Play around with some modifiers like iron, so you can see how you can make stark differences in your dyes

From these classes, you’ll walk away with fabric swatches of your new colors - and you’ll connect with a community of like minded individuals who you can connect with to do dye projects together if you’d like! No prior dye experience necessary to take this course.

You can sign up for the full Reimagining Your Wardrobe 3 Class Series and receive a 10% discount, or you can take each class individually. I can’t wait to see you in class! 🌿✨ taken in Seattle, Washington by @studioazurra

NATURAL DYEING WITH ROSEMARY 🌿

Have a rosemary bush in your yard? Rosemary is a beautiful herb to bring you beautiful yellows, beiges, and more when you experiment with different mordants and post-treatments. I kept it simple with this rosemary bath.

What colors have you gotten with rosemary? Let me know👇 taken in Seattle, Washington by @studioazurra

✨LEARN TO DYE WITH BARK EXTRACTS✨

Okay - maybe 8 seconds was an impossible timeframe to teach you how to dye this hair scarf. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Let me break it down for you more in-depth here:

1. Determine your dye stuff & what you plan to dye. Here, I used bark extract powder! Specifically logwood.

2. Weigh your fabric and measure out the amount of dye stuff or extract powder you’ll need. There are many resources online for how much you need for different types of dye materials.

3. Wash your fabric before dyeing it with pH neutral soap on warm to rid it of any contaminants.

4. Mordant or pre-treat your fabric to make the color stay longer and come out darker. I use soy milk exclusively as my pre-treatment, and will soak my fabric in a bucket of soymilk which I’ve watered down for approximately 12 hours. I also will do multiple rounds of soy milk pre-treatments for ultimate color uptake.

5. After the final soy milk soak, I throw the fabric back in the washer with pH neutral soap.

6. It has also been said that color stays better if you let your soy-milk treated fabric “cure” for weeks to months, but you can skip this step if you don’t have time.

7. I then get my stainless steel pot out, add water and add the dye material. I turn the heat on low and simmer for an hour, then I let it sit. For dyeing with extracts, you can skip the next step.

8. I will typically let my dye pot sit overnight with the dye stuff in it to ensure maximal extraction of the color. The next morning, I will strain out the dye material.

9. Add your wetted fabric to the dye pot. Ensure it’s wetted for even color absorption. Heat on a simmer for approximately an hour.

10. And bam! Within an hour you should have color showing! You may need to make some pH adjustments depending on the type of color you were looking for, but bam! There it is. ✨

Hang it to dry and wash with pH neutral soap as needed and you’ll have the coolest “new” clothing item in town. 💓 taken in Seattle, Washington by @studioazurra

I absolutely love the rainbow of colors you can get from fungi. This green is my personal favorite to work with - I could honestly live in it. ✨

One of my favorite things about naturally dyeing is the ability to create extremely even color, or to add a bit of flair and allow for natural color deposits. For this slip, I wanted a little bit of spotting to add some texture. Really love how it came out. 🌿

I thrifted this beautiful slip and dyed it with a bunch of other thrifted pieces which I’ll be listing on my site in the near future. ✨

Also: my September 13 natural dyeing class is now open for registration! The class will take place in Seattle, Washington, and will cover one of the most sustainable forms of natural dyes: dyeing with kitchen scraps. 🥑 I have a few spots left. 🐸
