Scottish physician pioneer Dr.Patrick Manson arrives in Formosa — present-day Taiwan. He arrives with a belief — Modern medicine can transform this island. Until a medical error shatters his belief. TODAY, 3rd OCTOBER is PATRICK MANSON’S BIRTHDAY. Patrick Manson was born on 3 October 1844, in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, a small town north of Aberdeen. From an early age, Manson had a strong curiosity about the natural world. He initially trained as an engineer but after developing health problems during his apprenticeship, he turned towards medicine. In 1860, he entered the University of Aberdeen to study medicine. At just 21 years old, he completed his medical studies and graduated in 1865. A year later, in 1866, his life took a dramatic turn. He left Scotland and travelled across the world to Formosa —present-day Taiwan. What happened as a young doctor’s journey to a distant and unfamiliar place would become a defining chapter of his life. In Taiwan and later in Amoy and Hong Kong, Manson became deeply involved in the study of tropical diseases. His observations of filarial disease eventually led him to discover the role of mosquitoes in transmitting the parasite, working that contributed to the development of modern tropical medicine. He later returned to Britain, where he continued his research and played a central role in establishing tropical medicine as a field of study. 🌊🌊🌊 This year, more than a century later, his journey did not end in the history records. His story travelled again. From Scotland to Taiwan. From Taiwan back to the UK. From history to the stage. Drifting, written by Taiwanese playwright Chia Wei Kuo and directed by Sasha Tzu Yin Hsu, begins with this historical figure and reimagines his journey through questions of home, distance, identity, history and the ways we see a place through someone else’s eyes. It is carried through another language, culture, and generation. Today, on Patrick Manson’s birthday, we remember where this journey began. More than a century later, his words travelled back again with the transformation by Taiwanese playwright Chia-Wei Kuo. However, a story cannot travel without a deliberate study to carry it.
