You can only hold 7 things in mind at once. Good design knows it. Miller’s Law — one of the cornerstones of cognitive psychology: our working memory juggles about 7 items at a time (±2). Anything more slips away. That’s why we read a phone number in 3 groups, not 9 digits. And it’s what we do in design: menus with a few clear sections, forms split into steps, three pricing tiers instead of fifteen. Only as much as the mind can hold. The result? Coming back from South America to Europe is a shock — and not the one I expected. 🌊 Yes, so much here is good: clean streets, comfortable pavements, the quiet certainty that a car will stop at the crossing. Standards worth appreciating — because those who travel know they’re not a given. But there’s another side. The endless visual noise. Shelves screaming with products, promos, „2 for 1”, a chaotic visual language that leaves my nervous system completely overstimulated. My first grocery run after eight months away? Pure overwhelm. Maybe the answer is balance. Less is more. And balance is best learned from nature — it never shouts.
