Introducing…HOUSEHOLD

A fabric collection in collaboration with @merchantandmills

The Household collection is inspired by the past and designed for honest and easy living. Deeply practical, dependable and a touch nostalgic. The pantry staples to every household.

Available in three designs..

Kelsch Cloth -
'Kelsch' is a traditional linen blend checked cloth, historically woven & then hand stitched into Victorian duvet covers and gifted to newlyweds in the 19th century as treasured household linens. Later made into ladies Pinnies with hand embroidered initials belonging to each owner. Re-imagined in 5 colourways.

Swedish Stripe -
Inspired by an original 18th century Swedish striped cloth. Swedish Stripes are traditionally known for being a durable and utilitarian heavy handloom cloth, woven in rural households. Bold simple colours were used to hand dye the stripe sequences, with farmers utilising strong natural dyes such as indigo, madder root & walnut husks - also known as the 'Peasant Palette'. The tightly woven cloth became popular worldwide, due to its dense weave and was primarily used to make mattress covers & bed pillows, able to prevent feathers and straw from poking through. Re-imagined in 4 colourways.

Faeger Traditional Ticking -
Derived from the Dutch word ’tike’ referring to a tightly woven heavy-duty utility fabric designed to act as a barrier cloth. Not necessarily the traditional ‘stripe' we all know it as today, which has adopted its name from the household mattress. Historically, upholsterers would personalise their 'ticking calico' with their own makers mark, using natural dye and a hand carved wooden hand block. A FAEGER signature ticking, available in 3 colourways.

RHUBARB - The bright red stem of a freshly harvested rhubarb leaf, easy to grow, dependable & rather delightful to taste. The pantry staple to most kitchen gardens. This colourway allows just enough richness to sing, yet just enough depth to feel timeless, not too bitter and not too sweet. A perfectly ripe harvested Rhubarb

We have created our signature Faeger ticking calico in Rhubarb, Butter & Mulch. Perfect for curtain linings, lampshades, cushions, bed & sofa toppers or a softer touch on upholstery. A pattern that says just enough, but not too much, and allows others to sing against it.

MULCH - that practical layer of love spread across the garden, keeping plants and pots safe and secure, smart and well dressed. A deep, rich chocolatey brown, with enough depth to have presence, but just enough softness to sit comfortably in the home.

We have created our signature Faeger ticking calico in a lovely choccy brown, perfect for curtain linings, lampshades, cushions, bed & sofa toppers or a softer touch on upholstery. A pattern that says just enough, but not too much, and allows others to sing against it.

Inspiration behind the name of our new collection with @merchantandmills..

HOUSEHOLD - inspired by the past and designed for honest and easy living. Deeply practical, dependable, familiar and a touch nostalgic.

The cloth is available in three designs, ready to be stocked as the pantry staples to the rest of your home. The names and the story are inspired by grannies pantry, and grandpas potting shed. The designs are inspired by what we have learnt & love from the past.

I was longing to find the perfect check for projects, something that didn’t feel too ‘twee’ and gingham, and always found ourselves hunting for antique ‘Kelsch cloths’ instead. Of course there are only so many left, and we needed something that was more readily available on repeat, that had the same beaten back handmade quality to it, yet that could be reliable and strong enough to use in interiors. We created a version inspired by this. Available in 5 colourways, with a Martindale rub test of 16,000. In a beautiful rustic weight woven as a Cotton / Linen blend. The cloth is left to be sun dried as opposed to mill machine dried to give a small ‘nod of thanks’ to the original Kelsch.

The second is classic rustic grade stripe, inspired by an 18th century sky blue original I have treasured for years (Seen hanging here on the Aga). We longed for a stripe that felt faded and worn, rustic enough without being threadbare, and so created a version by the meter. Available in three colourways, a beautiful worn cream & ecru, a faded Californian summer blue, and a sky blue & White Sea salt.

We worked alongside @joyofprint and created our own signature ticking calico printed cotton. The design is a gentle scrolling geranium leaf, available in three colourways. Inspired by the Howard & Sons traditional block print ticking, we needed a calico lining we could trust on our own Furntiute collection, that wasn’t a plain boring white. An under layer either left ‘as is’ for now, to sit beneath a slubby linen throw cover, or used by the meter to line curtains, make lampshades and sit back to accompany a louder fabric scheme.

The Snug in an Oxfordshire family home. A new build made to look like it’s always belonged. We added the beams and painted them in a lovely darker green to the lime walls, and had a floor to ceiling cherry red zelige tiled wall behind the log burner.
