The primary bedroom in our recently completed Edinburgh Townhouse.

The view from these incredible windows was the main focus of the room, so we designed a freestanding headboard in the centre of the space, allowing the huge bespoke wardrobes to sit neatly behind.

With ceiling heights of almost 4 metres, we needed a bespoke drop for the beautiful @antoinettepoisson wallpaper and finished the room with some of our favourite brands to work with.

The House That Faeger Built

The launch of @studiofaeger’s fabric collaboration with Rye-based cloth house, @merchantandmills that I was giddy with glee to shoot last month.

Named ‘Household’, it’s an assortment of textiles that Vix of Faeger describes as being: “inspired by the past and designed for honest and easy living. Deeply practical, dependable, familiar and a touch nostalgic. Something to remind us of Grannie’s Pantry, the Kitchen garden or the cutting bed.”

From traditional 18th-century Swedish-inspired stripes using natural dyes like indigo, madder root and walnut husks (charmingly known as a ‘peasant’s palette’ to Kelsch cloths (historically hand-stitched
into Victorian duvet covers and gifted to newlyweds in the 19th-century) in colourways like Pesto, Quince and my favourite, Tomato Vine – each is as beautifully designed, woven and dyed as the next.

A joy, a joy, a joy.

Warm, earthy and incredibly versatile, designing with brown brings a room together without demanding too much attention. From deep chocolate walls to warm timber, old leather and patterned fabrics, we love how brown creates a sense of depth and makes other colours feel richer.

We find it works beautifully layered with softer neutrals, earthy greens, ochres and warm pinks.

I sometimes get asked whether a piece is available in better condition — and I understand the instinct, but it's usually the wrong question. The chip on the foot of that vessel, the fade on that shade, the corner of marble softened by fifty years of hands: these aren't the price you pay for buying old. They're what you're buying.

A room where everything is flawless looks like a showroom, however good the pieces are. The eye needs proof of life — one thing that's clearly been somewhere, held by someone, used for decades before it arrived with you. Reproductions can't fake it.

The only rule is the line between wear and actual damage. A softened edge, an old repair, a faded chintz — character, live with it happily. A wobbly leg, active flaking, a crack that will travel — a project, walk away. Everything on the right side of that line makes the room better, not worse.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what luxury in our homes means now.

As more of our lives become digital, fast and easily replicated, I think we’re placing greater value on the things that feel unmistakably human.

Pieces collected over time rather than bought all at once. Objects literally made by human hands. Signs of age, imperfection and individuality.

Not necessarily expensive, but personal and difficult to replicate.

Maybe the new luxury is human touch, and making our homes feel a little more human too.
