Delighted to see the Phoenix home of Studio Ma principals Christiana Moss and Christopher Alt featured in a new Dwell+ story by Elizabeth Fazzare.

The article looks at the transformation of their 1953 ranch house through a climate-responsive renovation that pairs passive and active strategies, solar power, material reuse, and a new exterior “second skin” designed to temper the intensity of the Sonoran Desert.

As Chris notes in the piece, “sustainability was the project driver.” The house is a deeply personal expression of questions that have long shaped our work: How can architecture respond directly to sun, heat, water, and landscape? What can be retained rather than replaced? And how much can design accomplish before mechanical systems are asked to do the rest?

Thank you to @efazzare and @dwellmagazine for the thoughtful feature, “To Fend Off the Desert Heat, Two Architects Gave Their Arizona Midcentury a Second Skin.”

We are honored to share that our built design for Scottsdale's Museum of the West is the 2024 recipient of the Irving J. Gill Progressive Architecture Award as part of the annual Tilt-Up Achievement Awards. We were delighted to participate in the Tilt-Up Conference, where Principal Christopher Alt presented our innovative and sustainable work on Scottsdale's Museum of the West in a panel, and took a group of architects, engineers, and concrete industry members on a lively tour of the Museum.

Designed as part of an effort to revitalize the city's historic downtown, the museum has surpassed expectations by becoming the nation's leading destination dedicated to exhibiting the art and culture of the American west. In addition to the inherently cost-effective benefits of tilt-up construction, our contextually-driven design incorporates a self-shading facade that mitigates the desert heat.

Thank you to the jury for this distinguished award. It's a privilege to be recognized for our studio's commitment to innovative, equitable, and sustainable design—regardless of a project's scale, typology, or location. taken in Western Spirit Scottsdale's Museum of the West by @studiomainc

Last month, @archpaper covered @studiomainc's exciting reveal of its designs for the new @usembassypraia, Cabo Verde. Blending sustainable design with local culture, the building features Jura limestone, locally sourced basalt, and even draws inspiration from the island's traditional batuku beat. With a focus on resilience, the embassy will generate 80% of its energy on-site and adapt to Praia’s unique climate. Check out the gorgeous 'kintal' courtyard, a nod to Cabo Verde’s rich cultural heritage! @statedepartment #Architecture #SustainableDesign #EmbassyDesign #CapeVerde #Praia #GreenEnergy by @studiomainc

We’re excited to share that @archpaper recently profiled our ongoing project, the new U.S. Embassy Praia. As Trevor Schillaci writes, “The firm, which maintains a strong environmental emphasis in their design work, has created a building that will respond to Praia’s unique climate, characterized by dry desert heat for most of the year punctuated by bouts of extreme annual flooding during the late summer.”

Thank you to Trevor for his thorough, thoughtful writing and, of course, to @yhprumkcaj at AN for covering our work. Click the link in bio to read the full piece. Image credit @thisisbtb. taken in Praia, Cape Verde by @studiomainc

ITHACA: Please join principal Christiana Moss this Thursday, September 12, at Cornell AAP as she discusses four desert-inflected lenses through which Studio Ma approaches each project.

“From their earliest work on Phoenix’s ancient canal system to a state-of-the-art New Embassy Compound for the U.S. Department of State in Praia, Cabo Verde, Studio Ma has continued to ask deceptively simple questions — Where is the water? Where is the sun in the sky? — to inform a rigorously-researched, impeccably ecological approach to architecture.”

5:30-7:30pm, Milstein Auditorium - and on Zoom. Link in bio.

Please join principal Christiana Moss tomorrow, Thursday, at the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design for a fascinating panel on “The Embassy Effect,” organized by Curtis Clay, Director of Architecture of the Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations. She’ll be speaking about the process of designing a New Embassy Compound for Praia, Cabo Verde, and sharing what Studio Ma has learned about social, environmental, and cultural resiliency; transforming local practices and celebrations into built form; and the particular needs of complex international work. Please join Christiana, as well as Marion Weiss of Weiss Manfredi, Javier Arizmendi of SOM, and Susan Chin on June 6th at 2pm in room 206. by @studiomainc
