2023 was a tough year, maybe even the toughest for me. Though to start the year off on the best foot I can give, I took some time to reset and renew. I took everything out of my toolbox and sharpened. taken in New York, New York by @studiono.ha

The studio is ready for today’s Hinoki bath stool workshop.

Each student will start with a piece of Hinoki and, over the course of the next day and a half, shape it by hand into something they can bring home.

Looking forward to a weekend of making, learning, and working with this beautiful wood!

spent two days at with @studiono.ha working on a hinoki stool with dovetails! it was quite an intensive and precise process that gave me both an appreciation for the life lessons and humility wood can teach when you can’t simply overpower it with electric tools or rely on glue. this took 12+ humbling hours and i genuinely enjoyed every minute of it.

if anyone is near NY/NJ and interested in woodworking, i highly recommend taking a class with nolan! he is patient, kind, loves his craft, and everything a good teacher should be. his space is also very aesthetically soothing 😌 i learned so much from him and would love to come back one day 🪑

What began as a quiet longing for wooden panels became a space for devotion.⁣
⁣
A tokonoma-inspired room shaped by my husband’s hands and the language of everything I love…flowers, light, wood, stillness, film, fabric, faith and beauty.⁣
⁣
A place for prayer in the morning light, afternoon tea, ikebana-inspired arrangements, photographs, unfinished ideas, and the soft return to creativity.⁣
⁣
I brought him fragments of inspiration, feelings, textures, dreams and he turned them into something I could step inside of.⁣
⁣
There is something deeply moving about being loved through craftsmanship. Through time, care, patience, skill, and the quiet devotion of someone building beauty with their hands for yours to create within.⁣
⁣
I feel pieces of myself awakening here.⁣
And I think this room will hold the beginning of many beautiful things. 🤍

Another project complete. This one was for our home. My wife wanted a space to spark creativity, a space to display her flower creations. One that also promotes a sense of peace and calm. So this is what I came up with. I made a full video on YouTube of how I made it. Link in bio. by @studiono.ha

The beginning of a large project (for me). I joined two halves of a post with a kanawa tsugi scarf joint. More to come. #japanesejoinery #woodworking #handmadewithlove by @studiono.ha

I don’t usually post much about my personal life, but this felt like a big one. Celebrated 10 years of marriage with this wonderful woman this week. Feeling incredibly thankful. taken in New York, New York by @studiono.ha

A little assembly of the shaped leg and rail joinery. I made it with an internal, haunched pegged mortise and tenon. Say that three times fast! I also inset the shoulder into the leg so that it matched up really cleanly to give a more sculptural look. It’s a little more complicated than it needs to be, but I wanted to not use any glue on any joints, so the whole thing can be taken apart and put back together at any point by @studiono.ha
