Artists, questions to ask yourself. In our field we’re often handed the same advice:Apply for more grants.Build a website.Find a gallery.Make more work.Post more often.None of it is wrong.But without a strategy, it can feel like an endless list of responsibilities competing with the very thing you set out to do: make art.At Studio Palco, we’ve learned that successful practices aren’t built by checking every box.They’re built by making the right investment at the right time.Sometimes that’s professional documentation.Sometimes it’s clarifying your artistic philosophy.Sometimes it’s organizing years of work into a portfolio that finally reflects the artist you’ve become.Sometimes it’s realizing the opportunity isn’t what you need next—it’s the foundation that will allow you to pursue it with confidence.The artists we work with don’t come to us because they aren’t talented. A little something that inspired our team this week. At Studio Palco, we believe that if artists dedicate years to developing their work, we should dedicate just as much intention to understanding what helps artistic practices grow.This page comes from Configurations of Time: Imagining Other Temporalities in the Artist Residency by curator and researcher Angela Serino (@mydarlingangy )The book explores a simple but transformative idea: what if artist residencies valued flexible rhythms over rigid deadlines? It proposes three ways of thinking about time—space-time for creative growth, care-time for well-being, and soil-time for slow, sustainable development.It’s a reminder that meaningful artistic practices aren’t built through constant acceleration.They’re built through time, care, curiosity, and the conditions that allow ideas to mature.We’re grateful for the artists, curators, writers, and researchers whose work continues to shape our own. by @studiopalco_

Last year, our co-founder and photographer, Brooke D’Avanzo, was invited to document the residents at @fountainheadarts in Miami during Miami Art Week.Among them was @yashuared, whose practice brings together woodblock carving, printmaking, collage, memory, and history into deeply layered works around Black identity.At Studio Palco, we believe documentation is more than creating beautiful images for professional artists.It is a way of preserving an artist’s practice.These images become part of an archive — supporting future exhibitions, publications, applications, acquisitions, and the longer story of an artist’s career.Because a practice is not only measured by the finished artwork.It is also measured by the research, discipline, experimentation, and commitment that make the work possible.Grateful to Fountainhead Arts and Yashua Klos for allowing us to witness and document part of this process. by @studiopalco_

In December 2025, we had the privilege of documenting artist @ninasurel during the production of Lunar Bodies (Sisters of the Moon), where a complimentary component of a Miami-Dade public artwork was created with @ceramicasuro in Guadalajara, Mexico.In palco’s perspective - to witness a place where generations of craftsmanship, experimentation, and collaboration come together was a gift in itself.We’re grateful to have been welcomed into Cerámica Suro’s studio, trusted to document the collaborative process, and reminded that great work can cross borders.Thank you to Nina and the entire team at Cerámica Suro for opening your doors to us.Some of the most meaningful moments in our work happen behind the scenes. As artists, we often think of our practice as the work we make.And while the work is certainly at the center, a practice is larger than the work itself.It includes the language that helps others understand it.The documentation that allows it to circulate.The relationships that support it.The systems that sustain it.The opportunities that help it grow.Over the years, we’ve noticed that when artists feel stuck, the challenge is rarely the work itself.More often, it’s one of the structures surrounding it.A practice is not only what we create.It is the system that allows the work to develop, be understood, and move through the world. by @studiopalco_

Your studio is an opportunity! One of the easiest ways to exhibit your work is to invite people into the space where it is made.An open studio doesn’t require gallery representation.It doesn’t require institutional support.And it doesn’t even require a dedicated studio.Many artists successfully host collectors, curators, friends, and supporters in spare bedrooms, garages, home studios, and shared workspaces.The goal isn’t perfection.The goal is creating an opportunity for people to experience the work.If you’re planning an open studio:• Tidy the space• Label the work clearly• Have a price list available• Make it easy to take payment• Prepare packaging in advance• Create a simple way to collect contact information• Follow up afterwardDetails matter.Not because they make the work better.Because they make it easier for people to engage with it.Sometimes the most valuable exhibition space is the one you already have.Artist pictured: @billet.joyce by @studiopalco_

The goal was never simply to place the work.The goal was to create the conditions for it to be experienced.When artists think about opportunities, it’s easy to focus on exhibitions, fairs, and placements.What matters just as much, is context.Who encounters the work.Where they encounter it.How they encounter it.What began as a conversation about visibility became two public activations, including a placement at Pinta Miami and a solo presentation at JW Marriott.A reminder that strategic positioning can create opportunities beyond the ones we initially imagine.Thank you @priscilaschottart for the opportunity to support your career.
