The Armory Show @thearmoryshow 2025 opens tomorrow and Parul Thacker’s @studioparulthacker body of work 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦-𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦: 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘬𝘺, 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴 will be on view at our booth 407.

Referring to celestial studies of movements of planets and to meditative practices form the core of Thacker’s practice. Her work seeks to acknowledge the existence of ancient philosophies and classical Indian music alongside a technical vocabulary of algorithms, mathematical topology, and material molecularity—straddling registers of both ancient materials and contemporary practice, in ways that represent their rhizomatic circularity instead of a linear progression in time.

Mumbai-based visual artist Parul Thacker trained in textiles, and her practise has consistently shown a mastery over innovative stitches and surface textures which are expressed as sculptures and installations. In SURFACE we have had the privilege to debut a new work of the artist created specially for the exhibition, a set of twelve organza panels with embroidered drawings. Their striking images are diagrammatic representations of sound waves which Thacker captured over a two month residency last year in the Arctic.
.
The work is presented in conversation with a sound piece by musician and composer @frankhorvatofficial
.
This is the last week to view SURFACE — An Exhibition of Indian Embroideries and Surface Embellishment as Art. The exhibition remains on view through Sunday, the 23rd of February from 10 am to 8 pm at Anchal Niwas, Anoop Singh ki Haveli and Lakshmi Niwas around the renowned Stepwell Toorji ka Jhalra in the walled city of Jodhpur.

study notes from Life Divine : An evolution and revolution of our nature ; states of light, powers of spiritual life, vehicles of a spiritual existence

transformed by a state of being and a force of being superior to them, a power of Supermind

natural or evolutionary existence and from which nature in us is trying to arrive at self-knowledge and world-knowledge and a right consciousness and the right use of our existence in the universe

from intuition to intuition, from illumination to utter and boundless luminousness, from growing widenesses to the utter vasts and to very infinitude.

omniscience and omnipotence, but even in an evolutionary movement of its own graded self-manifestation. —————————————————————————*#Image credit : “*detail* from Ugo Carmeni Photography 2024”. #FondazionedellAlberodOro #PalazzoVendraminGrimani

Boundless Finite

The Unseen with whom there can be no pragmatic relations, unseizable, featureless, unthinkable, undesignable by name, whose substance is the certitude of One Self, in whom world-existence
is stilled, who is all peace and bliss — that is the Self, that is what must be known.
— Mandukya Upanishad 1
In the eyes of Parul Thacker, all existence has an integral texture, composed of the warp of cosmic reality and the weft of the individual soul. The meeting point between the cosmos and the individual is the liminal moment that is reflected in her art, the extended duration
of an experience that transcends past, present, and future. . . . *Devdip Ganguli is a Faculty Member at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education in Pondicherry (India), where he offers undergraduate courses on Sri Aurobindo’s philosophical works. The Symbol Dawn
It was the hour before the Gods awake. Across the path of the divine Event
The huge foreboding mind of Night, alone In her unlit temple of eternity,
Lay stretched immobile upon Silence’ marge. Almost one felt, opaque, impenetrable,
In the sombre symbol of her eyeless muse The abysm of the unbodied Infinite;
A fathomless zero occupied the world.
With this verse begins Savitri, considered the most significant literary work of Sri Aurobindo, the renowned Indian philosopher whose writings guide the life and work of Parul Thacker. Over two decades, the artist has frequently returned to the ashram community based on his teachings, established in 1926 in Pondicherry — now Puducherry — in the south of peninsular India, and has attributed significant shifts in her artistic practice to these stays. She has also often turned to Savitri for inspiration, solace, and comfort. *#Mayank Mansingh Kaul March 2024. (Extract from the catalogue)
