Hand-embroidered transparent organza. White-on-white circles, black bodies with halos. Pure fragility.

Watch it from inside: when the veils overlap, they breathe.

Architectural Digest India @archdigestindia: “Parul Thacker showcases her alchemic art at the Palazzo Vendramin Grimani in Venice: Camphor, fire and notes from tantra—Parul Thacker’s alchemic artistic practice finds a spot at Palazzo Vendramin Grimani in Venice” writes Shaikh Ayaz @shaikhayazindia.

“In Thacker’s hand, materials are constantly undergoing transformation and transmutation. If her paintings evoke a gazillion shades of black—sometimes recalling floating dark clouds—it could be because she burns camphor, a trick she discovered during one of her experiments. Nothing is quite what it seems in her art. “For me, the material is not chosen because of its form. It has nothing to do with the form. I call these ingredients because you cannot recognize them. Once the work is finished, they are completely camouflaged,” says Thacker, who prefers to describe herself as an “alchemist”.”

Palazzo Vendramin Grimani riapre al pubblico con una nuova mostra Evento Collaterale della 60. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia.
'Per non perdere il filo. Karine N'guyen Van Tham – Parul Thacker' è un progetto espositivo concepito e prodotto dalla Fondazione dell'Albero d'Oro a cura du Daniela Ferretti.

Dal 20 aprile, gli spazi dell'antica dimora veneziana accoglieranno le opere delicatamente poetiche, intime e frugali dell'artista franco-vietnamita Karine N'guyen Van Tham (Marsiglia, 1988) e quelle multimateriche, espressive e spirituali dell'artista indiana Parul Thacker (Mumbai, 1973).

Invitate a trascorrere un periodo a Venezia al fine di collaborare alla installazione della mostra, le artiste costruiranno il loro dialogo attorno al tema del filo, inteso come mezzo espressivo, fonte di ispirazione e metafora che allude al principio ordinatore e alla scrittura e che si sviluppa fisicamente nell'intreccio, nella tessitura e nell'arte del ricamo.

Per non perdere il filo. Karine N’guyen Van Tham – Parul Thacker è un progetto realizzato con il sostegno di @fondationetrillard.

What is it about the paradox of a 'Black Sun' that has resonated with artists accross generations in the 20th and 21st centuries?

I don't quite know the answer so I am sharing here a string of works made between 1939 and 2019, by artists Ansel Adams, SH Raza, Alexander Calder, Terry Frost, Damien Hirst, Richard Serra and Parul Thakkar, all but one bearing titles that reference the 'Black Sun'.

Their works chip away at our steadfastness as viewers, not so much because they evoke sound or imply a body, but rather because they place us in front a gap—the gap between intention and perception. Any understanding of the work springs from this void, any insight is articulated by navigating this space. Here, a work does not just ‘happen’ to us, but rather with us."
