We’re excited to share the first recordings from the @soltansaam_ family archive.

A collection of family cassette recordings, Gilaki songs, and Iranian tracks close to heart.

Through translations and transliterations, we hope to make it easier for everyone to explore and connect with the rich heritage of the province of Gilan.

You can listen to the full recording on our YouTube and SoundCloud, via the Linktree in our bio. Full English and Finglish translations are available in the descriptions.

Some additional context that couldn’t fit in the main post:

The Tudeh Party, Iran’s leading communist movement, drew many of its early supporters from Gilan, a region long defined by its resistance to monarchist oppression, as well as British, Russian, and later Soviet interference and invasion.
Shaped by the Jangal Movement, Gilan developed its own blend of socialist and pan-Islamic ideals, reflecting both anti-colonial and reformist hopes.
Music and art from Ahshapour’s era often carried that spirit, telling stories not only of everyday life and dance, but also of political struggle, faith, and solidarity within Gilan and beyond Tehran.

We’ll continue sharing more recordings, stories, and insights from our shared archive, preserving these sounds and memories.

Still taking this all in 🫣

Last week we held our first event, a small fundraiser called Dorehami (meaning gathering in Farsi) that honestly turned out so special. Together we raised $310 for @racsaustralia , shared some familiar SWANA sounds, and filled the space with a lot of warmth, dancing, and connection 🤍

One of the nicest parts was seeing SWANA DJs and community together, meeting each other and connecting, sharing music, and reconnecting with our roots. Sara and I have been wanting to do something like this for a long time, so finally making it happen felt really exciting and energising.

Huge thank you to everyone who supported us, helped us put things together, shared their wisdom, donated, and came along for the night.

Special thank you to @nouchalili and @jaxson_daniher for being so open with their space, @sheiditaaa for helping push this into reality, and @djdeens and @joj.bouk for coming through with so much kindness on such short notice ✨️

Very excited for what’s ahead and already scheming the next one 👀

Our dear friend Delaram is presenting her work at The Annual 2025 UNSW:

Beneath The Silk’s Skin (زیر پوست ابریشم), and we can’t wait to check it out! 💛

Delaram reimagines Iranian and Afghan embroidery traditions, transforming them into interactive sculptures made of textiles, metal, light, and sound. As you move through the work, your presence triggers lights and audio, bringing stories of memory, craft, and heritage to life.

When & Where: Paddington Campus, UNSW Sydney – Wednesday 10 December, 6–9pm

A little tease since we’ve taken ages to post. ADHD and perfectionism are the worst bedfellows… 😵‍💫

A while back, I stumbled upon some dusty old cassettes at my auntie’s place. Most were family and friends singing, but a few had my Khale Audi joon performing in her native Gilaki, a dialect from the north of Iran 💚

We’re starting with her recording of Jaane Maryam (Dear Maryam), originally sung by Ahmad Ashoorpoor, a beloved singer from Gilan best known for his song Johme Bazaar (Friday Market).

This recording was made around the 70’s, while Khale Audi and the family were waiting for my Mamani (grandmother) to return from Abadan.

In the coming week, we’ll share more about Khale Audi, Ashoorpoor, Gilan, and release the full recording on SoundCloud, along with a subtitled YouTube version with translation and transliteration for those who can’t read Farsi script.

Welcome to Sarsaam (سرسام)!

Sarsaam is a small project to showcase South West Asia & North African (SWANA) sounds, culture, memory, movement, and artists in Eora and beyond. A link to discover what’s happening across the SWANA diaspora.

Sarsaam will be a place for bridging gaps and creating connections across our diverse region. A place to connect with culture and reconnect for the diaspora and the children of the diaspora.

Our goal is to see the SWANA community flourish in Australia and beyond. Nothing is set in stone, we’ll be exploring different avenues to express our creative vision while sharing what’s happening in the community both here and abroad.

While we get to work creating some content, we’ll be sharing what’s happening in our community. We hope you enjoy what we conjure up 🔮
