As we kick off construction for this incredible restaurant design, we would like to share the ‘heart’ of the design; materials.

Every material tells a story.

The name of the restaurant ‘Ekyoto’ (noun, Luganda) : meaning hearth; a place of gathering and warmth.

The name of this restaurant is inspired by the clients vision to create a welcoming and warm place of gathering, curated by a palette of locally sourced timber, terracotta, stone, raffia, leather, ceramics, and woven textiles that celebrates the richness of African craftsmanship and the beauty of natural imperfection.
Inspired by the idea of the hearth, the restaurant is designed as a place to gather, linger, and reconnect; a neighbourhood destination where warmth comes as much from the materials as it does from the people who fill the space. by @studiosomethingsomething

The Akili School is a very special project on our desk. A new boarding school to be built in Uganda competing at an international level for secondary education.

Student Hostels
A welcoming spatial design balancing refuge nooks with vibrant social spaces

“TAS is not just a school project - it’s an institution in the making. Today is about clarity: how dignity, curiosity, and warmth come together spatially, materially, and visually.”

“Akili”
[noun] primarily means intelligence, mind, intellect, or wisdom.

In our Friday Design Charette with the team, our lead industrial designer, Kirsty, prompted the team on concepts of gratitude throughout the design process.

How gratitude changes the position of the designer:

Without gratitude:
Design can become ego-driven
The designer becomes the “author”
Objects become statements

With gratitude:
The designer becomes an observer/interpreter
Design becomes collaborative
Objects become conversations

“Gratitude softens ownership. It allows us to notice influence rather than claim invention.”

Nadene van Rensburg | Project Interior Designer

I am anchored by function in design and attentive to human experience. My work unfolds where people and context meet, shaped through spatial narrative and a thoughtful engagement with materials

"Some things earn their place over time - a chair, a shadow, a pause - and together they teach space how to feel."
