Our first tests of papyrus-imprinted concrete columns for the Restore University Project. The idea is to pre-cast triangular column encasings and use them as permanent formwork. Using the papyrus texture will not only ground the buildings in their location but also provide a hard-wearing and durable finish.

A new chapter is taking root in Northern Uganda.

Last week, we joined @lovedoes and our collaborators to break ground for Restore University, marking the beginning of a campus designed to nurture learning, sustainability, and renewal.

To honour the occasion, a Ficus thonningii tree was planted – a fast-growing species of fig tree native to Africa, known by common names such as the common wild fig, wild fig, or strangler fig. Widely used in African ethnomedicine and culturally significant across the continent, it stands as a fitting symbol of growth and the future we are helping to shape.

This is more than a university; it is a seed of hope that will grow for generations.

Project Milestone | Restore University, Amuru District

We are delighted to share key milestones in the ongoing development of Restore University in Amuru District, Uganda; an inspiring project by @lovedoes, designed and delivered in collaboration with our partners at @localworksug.

So far, we’ve completed the Schematic Design and Design Development stages, and are now progressing through Technical Design.
In preparation for the main works, a separate Site Enabling Works package was awarded to Kyago Tech Engineering Ltd, a local Gulu based contractor. Their scope includes bulk excavation, roads, drainage, and fencing; marking a crucial step towards realizing the vision for this new university.

*Key project milestones:*
📅 Tendering completed – September 2025
🤝 Prestart meeting – 1st October 2025
🖊️ Contract signing – 3rd October 2025
🌱 Groundbreaking ceremony – 10th October 2025
🚜 Mobilization completed – 16th October 2025
🏗️ Commencement date – 17th October 2025

As Quantity Surveyors, our focus remains on ensuring transparency, value for money, value added project management services and equitable contract administration, guided by the FIDIC Red Book form of contract; a framework that promotes fairness for both employer and contractor.

Looking ahead, the next phase will feature compressed earth block construction, utilizing materials sourced directly from site; a sustainable choice that reduces embodied carbon and supports local material cycles.

We celebrate the engagement of local expertise in Kyago Tech Engineering, reinforcing our belief that the growth of communities begins with trusting local capacity.
Here’s to a project that blends education, sustainability, and opportunity;all taking shape in Amuru.

A week ago, today, we brought the Archive of Unheard Solutions to life at the Transformations Conference ESG 2025. It was more than an installation; it was a quiet space for reverence, honouring the grassroots genius that already exists in our homes and streets.

This archive is our answer to a vital question: How does the government and private organisations engage with the sustainable wisdom inherent in South African communities?

This work was profoundly contextualised during our panel, “Art, land & spatial politics: South African practitioner case studies in sustainability transformations.” Thank you to the incredible moderator, @naadirapatel____ , for guiding such a rich, necessary conversation.

A deep bow to our fellow panelists, whose powerful case studies continue to inspire and challenge us:
•Simangaliso Sibiya (@the.ungovernable) on the power of ‘the ungovernable’.
•Bekezela Mabena & New Futures Arts Collaborative for transforming narratives around mining.
•Jade Hutchison (@studiosomethingsomething) on ethics and community-centred power dynamics.

And, of course, a special thank you to Jessica Wu for bringing us together in a space that needed some kind of INVASION from the people on the ground ✨

We are deeply grateful to everyone who paused, remembered, and contributed their family’s ‘unheard solutions’ to the archive. You proved that the most radical blueprints for a sustainable future aren’t in keynotes; they’re written in the margins, in memory, and in the hands of those who have always known how to ‘make a plan’.

The question now is: What will you do with what you remember?
