As our friends at The Black School (@theblackschool) prepare for their schoolhouse opening celebration today, we’re reflecting on the ways they build community through transformative art education.

Founded by Joseph Cuillier and Shani Peters in 2016, TBS is an experimental art school teaching BIPOC students and allies to become agents of change in their communities. Through design education and programming rooted in African diasporic histories, TBS transforms social realities through Black love, healing, and self-determination.

Reflecting these themes, the Process Deck shown here is a tarot-style, interactive tool that creatively explores theories, principles, and mediums for progress. Discover more about how art can activate change at the local and national levels, and shop the Process Deck in-store or online at the link in our bio. 🔗

The Studio Museum in Harlem’s #StudioSalon series is back!

This dynamic season of literary discussions starts with “Primary: After and With Alma Thomas” from scholar and poet Alexis Pauline Gumbs (@alexispauline) on October 10, 2026 at the Studio Museum.

Gumbs will be in conversation with interdisciplinary artist and writer Steffani Jemison (@steffanijemison) to celebrate the release of “Primary” and its exploration of the life and art of the late artist Alma Thomas (1891-1978).

Born in Columbus, Georgia, Thomas’s lifelong study of color theory expanded upon the work of the Washington Color School and the Abstract Expressionists of the 1940s and 1950s. Although best known for her large-scale acrylic paintings, Thomas also painted watercolors throughout her career, several of which are in the Studio Museum’s permanent collection.

Learn more about the upcoming Studio Salon and shop “Primary” through the link in our bio. 🔗

The WNBA (@wnba) semifinals are heating up, and NBA (@nba) preseason is tipping off! 🏀 We’re more than ready. Are you?

This “Lift Every Voice All Weather Net” from Boston-based artist Glen Gaines (@suhrealist.co ) is informed by the legacy of activist Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), the Pan-African flag, and the “African American Flag” (1990), an iconic work in the Studio Museum in Harlem’s collection from artist David Hammons.

Compatible with all standard basketball rims, Gaines designed these nets as a symbol that highlights Black excellence in sports and signals collective Black greatness beyond the arena. Gaines’s nets were recently installed in basketball courts across New York City as part of a permanent citywide initiative.

To shop these nets, visit our website or stop by Studio Store on 125th Street!

On September 24, 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem inaugurated the opening of its first home on Fifth Avenue with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by director Charles E. Inniss and Museum trustees.

Fifty-eight years later, as we approach one year in our new building, we continue to celebrate the artists, supporters, and community members whose commitment has shaped the Studio Museum’s mission and legacy.

In honor of this milestone, we are excited to announce the upcoming release of “Studio Museum in Harlem: A History,” our first book detailing the institution's story from 1968 to today.

Edited by Romi Crawford and distributed by Yale University Press (@yalebooks), the publication brings together oral histories from the Museum's founding figures; essays by leading scholars, curators, and artists; and a trove of archival material to recount the first comprehensive history of the Studio Museum.

A beautiful time was had ❤️️!

On August 28, Studio Sundays got a special family photo treatment from Studio Museum Collection artist Aya Brown (@ayabrown.tiff) and videographer, photographer, and archivist Andre Uncut (@andreuncut).

Over 120 families and friends dropped by the Museum’s Reading Room for free portraits inspired by the familiar warmth of Black households. Featuring a wall painting by Brown and paired with nostalgic furniture, the space celebrated diasporic history, culture, and memory.

Visitors could also shop Brown’s collectibles, including her recently released, Nike Air Max 95s and limited-edition “Grandmas Prayers” print. Produced in collaboration with Leslie Diuguid of Du Good Press (@dugoodpress), is an edition of 100, available exclusively at Studio Store!
