On September 24, 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem inaugurated the opening of its first home on Fifth Avenue with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by director Charles E. Inniss and Museum trustees.

Fifty-eight years later, as we approach one year in our new building, we continue to celebrate the artists, supporters, and community members whose commitment has shaped the Studio Museum’s mission and legacy.

In honor of this milestone, we are excited to announce the upcoming release of “Studio Museum in Harlem: A History,” our first book detailing the institution's story from 1968 to today.

Edited by Romi Crawford and distributed by Yale University Press (@yalebooks), the publication brings together oral histories from the Museum's founding figures; essays by leading scholars, curators, and artists; and a trove of archival material to recount the first comprehensive history of the Studio Museum.

My love of Harlem began when I attended the Junior Scholars Program at the Schomburg Center as a teen. It’s a magical experience walking the same grounds as the greats, our ancestors, who prayed for the freedom we inherit from their sacrifice and strength.

I’m blessed to raised in a city that has institutions like the @studiomuseum and grateful to be back home raising my daughter here. My daughter knows nothing less than creating art in the same space that holds the artists she admires.

She gets to experience the whimsy and freedom of playing and learning in a community that supports her curiosity and passion. She creates and freely shares her thoughts in a community that loves her.

The Studio Museum is home to Black art - past, present, and future. If you haven’t yet, it’s time for you to visit.
