As the nights draw in, we’re all dreaming of cosy rooms to snuggle up in.

This twin bedroom fits the bill. Layered with texture and wrapped in a warming terracotta, it’s the perfect place for guests to retreat to.

Have you ever wondered why some rooms feel cosy and warm whilst others feel cold and clinical? It is quite often the temperature of the light. It can completely change the feel of a room and how colours look and is a really quick fix - you just need to buy the right bulb.

As you can see, warmer light makes the terracotta more vibrant and the blue reads more green. The cooler light makes the terracotta look flatter and takes out some of the warmth while the blue looks more icy.

The paint swatch was in exactly the same location and filmed at the same time, I just changed the temperature of the light on it for demonstration purposes!

It’s been a really busy and exciting time with various events and action on projects ramping up.

Here’s some BTS and highlights of this week including:
- A great visit to London Design Social @thedesignsocialpopup seeing many of my favourite fabric and wallpaper designers alongside some new discoveries and a brilliant talk.

- A Pimlico Rd potter, including a a good look at the yet to be released lighting from @mgandco, sourcing in @fermoie and beautiful antiques.

- Some great project progress, site visits and problem solving with everything from plumbing, plastering and carpentry to paint and tiling happening at different projects.

- A big week for deliveries including lots for a bathroom project soon to kick off.

- And of course, some of the less photogenic but equally important admin. taken in The Pimlico Road by @studiosturt

Focus on Design is a great chance to meet suppliers, see new collections and join in talks and workshops hosted by some of the best in the industry.

Instead of giving you my view of upcoming trends or my personal highlights, I’m going to share some simple things I was reminded of at Focus/26 @designcentrech that we can all take forward.

Scroll through. Let me know your thoughts and if anything resonates with you.

I’m Rosy, an interior designer based in West Sussex who loves colour, pattern and British Design. I help people create homes that feel and function as good as they look.

Get out in the world to see and feel quality and craftsmanship and to make human connections.

You can never have too many lamps. Simple.

The layering of different styles and mixing vintage with contemporary pieces is what makes a room feel characterful and lived-in.

Look to the past for inspiration. Liberty’s newer designs are inspired heavily by their extensive archive.

Enjoy old design and art books, historical fashion and the architecture of period properties. You will learn far more about ‘good design’ than on Pinterest.

Express yourself through fashion. Events like this are excellent for people watching and it’s great to see so many different personal styles and people really owning their own look. Not so much style on show here, just some red socks.

Some of the best work comes from collaboration. Two sets of skills, two sets of ideas, two opinions. Even just bouncing ideas around with someone with a different viewpoint can be hugely beneficial.

Work on the art of story-telling and immersing people in your world. It makes us feel connected and is one of tools successful brands and business owners use.

You might feel nervous or out of your comfort zone. So are many others. Do it anyway.

Design doesn’t always have to be serious. It can be playful and fun. One of the things I love the most about visiting the House Guests is seeing how each brand’s personality is shown through their stand.

Be curious. Look closer. See something you love? Ask yourself why you love it. How does it make you feel? What detail do you notice and why? Is it the colour, the materia taken in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour by @studiosturt

I’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg in the video as there are many more types of light within each category and many factors at play when I’m considering what is needed and appropriate for a home.

It’s a really important step in the design process that can determine not only the mood and feel of a room, but also whether it functions as intended. I’ll be talking about this more with some real project examples soon!

For a simple improvement in your own home, consider your 5-7 sources (go back and watch the previous video if you missed it!) and make sure you have a range of the different types of lighting within that.

Save for when you need it and tune in for the next episode all about temperature of light.

Why is a cloakroom or small WC a perfect place to go bold?

- It’s one of the rooms guests will use the most. It makes it a memorable and enjoyable experience for them.
- You only spend a few minutes at a time in the room, meaning it won’t be overstimulating and you won’t tire of it.
- Many cloakrooms lack natural light or windows so you can lean in to making it a cosy and cocooning space.
- There’s less risk of moisture than in a bathroom, so wallpapers and panelling won’t need extra protection and will last for the long haul.
- The rooms are small so you can splurge on the dream wallpaper or luxurious finishes and take risks you might be nervous to do elsewhere.

The number of light sources in a room is not a hard and fast rule - it will depend on all sorts of factors such as the room’s use and size; however, it’s a good guide which I use as a starting point when planning a layered lighting scheme. 💡

A room with only 1 or 2 light sources won’t give the same feel and ambience as one with more. And the more options there are, the more flexibility there is in making sure the room works for the different activities taking place, times of day (or year) and the desired mood.

Save this as a reminder and come back for part 2, where I’ll be talking about the different types of lighting within a room.
