DAUGHTER FELT, LEARNING THROUGH DESIGN, LDF 2026

15th - 20th September
107B Commercial St,
E1 6BG

Daughter Felt is a modular play sculpture, a collection of interlocking pieces that can be combined, rearranged, added to and taken apart; a scaffold for imagination and participation.

The sculpture’s design is led by the properties and perforation of the materials, drawing on the 5,000- year history of felt as a material for tents and modular dwellings.

Every material in the piece has a past life. The steel is reclaimed from gallery renovations at @natural_history_museum and the felt is a waste stream from the production of piano felt in West Yorkshire woollen mill @awhainsworth . Sourced through Studio TIP’s reuse network, these materials transform from waste into a new, open-ended object for play.

This piece builds on Studio TIP’s ongoing research into modular systems, creative joining, play and communal making.

The name Daughter Felt relates to traditional Mongolian felt making, where the ‘mother felt’ is utilised and added to, to create new pieces known as the ‘daughter felt’. This process is a collaborative system by the peoples and animals of Mongolian nomadic communities, transmitting local knowledge and craftsmanship from elders to younger generations. by @studiotip_

Silks in the making for @domainetrouillas

Working with waste and off cuts means every step of the process has to be material-led. Here’s a glimpse into what that process looks like 👀

Working with @yodomo.co we assessed, measured and cataloged every piece of silk sourced from the highest quality makers and factories. This step is essential to understand what’s in your palette

Testing waterproofing to help the silk live outdoors 🌳

Building the colour combinations that reference the earth tones on the farm and @sipsberlin wines.

After auditing all the silk pieces I could design the composition to reflect the the balance of open space and rigid lines in the barn itself - which I think is also interestingly reflected in the open spaces of the farm, combined with the graphic lines of the vines.

This design is also the most efficient use of the fabric with as few cuts as possible - just 0.5m of @pongeessilks was purchased to add the final flash of colour.

1000m of thread later … massive thank you to @fibrelab for lending us their space to create these giant pieces.

And any scraps we had in the making have also gone to Fibre Lab to be recycled into paper 💌

Essential blessing from my familiar

Site-specific works always require a mobile work station

Huge thanks to @ninaandcodesign and @atelier.wama for the help installing alongside their gorgeous kitchen by @studiotip_

Silks for @domainetrouillas - A very special installation for a place close to our hearts at Studio TIP ♥️🍷

Over the past 6 weeks we’ve designed, fabricated and installed giant silk hangings in the old machinery barn in at Domaine Trouillas in the South of France recently taken on by @sips.studio to make natural wine.

The brief for silk follows the history of the farm, which was once a silk factory, and working with our sourcing partner the wonderful @yodomo.co were able to reuse 45m of off cut and end-of-roll silk from from brands including Vivienne Westwood, Romo Group and Fosbery Studio, colour-matching just one final piece with Indian silk from Pongees, all in keeping with circular design principles that prize reuse and keeping materials at their highest value.

This has been a dream of a project and can’t wait to share more behind the scene details 🛠️ by @studiotip_

Beautiful weekend at @thefestivalofmaking in Blackburn, it was an honour to speak to so many people who had deep connections to the materials in our palette from local manufactures.

So many sculptures, assembedges and playful objects made over the weekend - thank you to @flossmakesstuff for all your help and to everyone who came to the workshop! taken in Blackburn by @studiotip_
