I feel like we talk about my house all the time, but I haven’t properly introduced myself in a while. I’m Zenia, but call me Z. I’m the oldest of five, and I’ve loved making things since I was little. My mom probably would’ve preferred I stick to art instead of sneaking off with her camera, but the pictures weren’t half bad, so I feel like that should count for something. I love my animals, a good workout, and going somewhere I’ve never been. Just don’t invite me to play a sport. I’ll come, but you’re going to regret having me on your team. I was always picked last in school. 😅 Did anything surprise you? by @styleitprettyhome
My idea of Christmas decorating is putting greenery everywhere and then checking to see if I missed a spot. Christmas garland on the mantel, a wreath above it, a few extra branches tucked in. Just a small forest in the sitting room. Very reasonable. But greenery and candlelight make everything feel so cozy for the holiday season. Every year I remember why this is my favorite part of decorating for Christmas. Anyone else convinced the room just needs “a little more greenery”? “What color is this?” is easily one of the most asked questions about this bathroom! The walls are Rosemary by Sherwin-Williams, and the ceiling is Clary Sage. I wanted a deep, rich green that didn’t feel too saturated, especially since this bathroom has no natural light. Rosemary gave me that cozy feeling I was after, and the lighter Clary Sage ceiling helps reflect the light and keeps the room from feeling too dark. Still green everywhere, just with a little breathing room. by @styleitprettyhome
I tiled over our bathroom tile a year and seven months ago, and I’m finally ready to talk about the consequences. We use this bathroom several times a day, every day… and so far, zero issues. Sorry if you were expecting a demolition update. The old tile wasn’t original to our 1935 house. It was part of a renovation sometime in the ’60s or ’70s, and it was sitting on about 2½ inches of mortar. Getting it out would have been a whole project of its own. The floor was solid, and we checked the support from downstairs before deciding to keep it. I still had to clean, prep, and prime the surface before installing the new tile. There was plenty of work involved without adding a jackhammer to the situation. Does that mean you can tile over whatever’s in your bathroom? It depends on what’s there. Loose tiles, cracks, movement, or water damage need investigating first. The added height also matters for your doors, thresholds, and toilet flange. This marble was my spouse’s dream tile, so we wanted to make room for it in the budget. A small bathroom can be a good place to use a pricier stone because you need fewer square feet. Price out the tile, waste, and supplies before you talk yourself out of it. For this floor, keeping what was underneath made sense. And a year and seven months later, the most dramatic thing about it is probably going to be the comment section. by @styleitprettyhome
I really will move an entire room by myself just to see if I like it better. And if I don’t, I guess I’m moving it all back. #ad This time, thankfully, I love it. The couch faces the dining room now, and the light finally found its spot too. @lightopia_ gifted me this fixture, and I was originally hoping to use it in the dining room, but it didn’t quite work in there. I tried it here instead, and I love it against the wood ceiling. Sometimes you just have to see things in place. They have so many beautiful vintage-inspired lights if you’ve been looking for something along those lines for your home. Comment SHOP for the light link! by @styleitprettyhome
In my defense, I get to enjoy these diamonds every time I walk through the dining room. Very practical of me, honestly. I wanted that cozy cottage feeling, and even with tools everywhere and half the room unfinished, this window was already doing its thing. Our Cape Cod is almost 100 years old, and I’ve been trying to bring back some of the charm it’s lost through the years. These diamond panes felt like they belonged here. Now I keep stopping to stare instead of finishing the room 😂 JUST KIDDING… Or am I by @styleitprettyhome
Ten weeks of living with my sister and I now willingly leave the house to go to Pilates. Multiple times a week. I don’t know who’s in charge here anymore. She’ll suggest we go somewhere “for the vibes” and I’m over here asking what we’re going to do there. The answer is enjoy ourselves. That’s the whole plan. I’m learning to accept it. But some of my favorite parts have been the little things. Having someone to sit with on a rough day without needing to explain much. Catching each other saying something mean about ourselves. Her noticing when I put on an actual outfit instead of whatever I was painting in. Turns out a “you look so cute!” really does change how you feel walking out the door. And thankfully, we’re equally committed to stopping for a sweet treat. Neither of us is a difficult sell. I knew I’d enjoy having her here, but I didn’t realize how much I’d enjoy doing regular, everyday life together. Who’s the person who can convince you to leave the house when you’ve already decided you’re staying home? by @styleitprettyhome
I wanted a walk-in pantry so badly I convinced myself this was enough space for one. To be fair, I could get in there. I just hadn’t added cabinets yet 😂 The biggest thing was using wall cabinets instead of deeper base cabinets so I’d still have room to move. From there, I worked my way up, adding storage wherever I could and building what I couldn’t find to fit. And because I apparently can’t leave a small space alone, it got a painted gingham ceiling, a floral curtain, and shelves for some of my favorite dishes. Just because it’s where I keep the groceries doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty. There were definitely moments when I wondered if I was trying to squeeze too much in here, but now? I’m so glad I went for it. This little pantry ended up being one of my favorite things I’ve done in this house. A little delusional, maybe. But this time it worked out. by @styleitprettyhome
Some people knock walls down. I felt like this house needed a few back. The living room opened right into the stair area, and I kept feeling like it needed something. I didn’t want to close it all off, but I wanted the living room to feel a little more tucked in. These half walls and columns were the answer. You can still see the staircase, but now there’s a little separation. And staining the wood made the whole thing feel so much warmer. It’s funny how adding something can make you realize what was missing. Would you have left it open? Because I’d build these again in a heartbeat. by @styleitprettyhome
@cubbyash And this is why I have such a hard time understanding when people get rid of their old solid wood doors. I know restoring them is a lot of work. I’ve spent plenty of hours questioning what I got myself into. But then you start seeing those details again, and you remember why you bothered. These doors have been part of this house for almost 100 years. If I can save them, I’m going to. by @styleitprettyhome
every room needs a little red, so let’s see where it’s hiding in the library/sitting room. The “unexpected red theory” is the idea that a touch of red can make a space feel more pulled together, even if it doesn’t match anything else. It can be something as small as a detail in a painting, a book spine, or a little color in a rug. I’m usually so focused on the greens and warm neutrals in here, but those little touches of red deserve some credit too. Look around your sitting room. Do you have a little red hiding somewhere? by @styleitprettyhome
