ABOLISH COOLNESS
We aim to dismantle all forms of hierarchy through establishing a horizontal space. black_irl parties are for and by the people. If you don't treat everyone, regardless of your familiarity with them, with equal respect and compassion, then stay home. We want to cultivate a culture where people dance, sing, smile, and laugh with, listen and encourage each other. None of that "I'm too cool to be warm and welcoming" shit.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the Northern Union Army arriving in Galveston, Texas, to "free" the last enslaved people in the "United States." We want to use this day as an opportunity to exercise righteous rage, remembrance, and release. However, we must first contextualize this holiday. A common misconception is that the southern "United States" was the only region on Turtle Island that permitted slavery before or up to 1865, when in reality, slavery was carried out against Afrikan and Indigenous peoples in all parts of the island (California, Canada, etc.). The traditional institution of slavery also continued for decades after 1865 while also being reborn into the modern prison-industrial system. To learn more about how to get involved with the ongoing struggle for Pan-Afrikan liberation, we encourage you to engage with one of the abolitionist collectives that will be tabling at the party.

I made this portrait of my friend Dan Gilstrap @myownsundays last winter.

Dan is showing work this Sunday from 3PM-6PM as a part of Black Folk Stars, a series of shows held in an intimate non traditional setting focusing on an interdisciplinary group of Atlanta creative talent. Curated by the indomitable Éngel Ellis @keimuseum

:)

It’s cold when I arrive at Dan’s studio to take his portrait, and the thunk of the heavy metal door that recklessly swings closed behind me offers no insulation from the sagittate November chill. My nose hardens, and I become aware of the fading dexterity in my fingers. The weight of my camera and its firm metal edges press into my numb skin.

Dan wears a few layers of clothes to keep him protected from the worst slices of the cold. A t-shirt, a button-up, a hoodie, overalls, and a beanie. A painted canvas looms over him in a corner of the tidy studio. Grace Jones is both taking shape and being deconstructed. Dan doesn’t speak to me while he works, and I set up quietly next to him. His strokes are deliberate and considered, then frantic and scraping, terraforming his subject’s expression over and over again.

I feel like a voyeur or a tourist peeping in on a ritual not meant for my eyes. When I intercede to make his picture, he is pliant and accepting and answers each command with a gentle acknowledgment.

“Lift your head.” ”Turn your cheek.”
