Pillowcases galore! I’ve been on a mission to finish old projects to clear out space, and these made the top of that list. I was looking for some way to use up a bunch of the flannel I had, and came across Ryan’s Case for Smiles, which is a charity that organizes fun pillowcases for kids going through pediatric cancer treatment. I had made 12, but had an additional 7 that were partly cut out. I finished cutting those out and whipped them up, and dropped them off today! I started these over two years ago, so it feels good to finally check it off the list, and pillowcases are so fast and easy!

✨ TRADER SEWS TOTE ✨

I finally made one!! 👜🧵

And I filmed the whole process for a new sew-along tutorial on YouTube! If you’ve been wanting to make one of these, come sew along with me. 💕

Of course, I had to add a little personal touch with my custom Twin Cities Frocktails 2026 patch. 🪡✨

I’m obsessed with how it turned out!

Would you add a patch to yours? 👀 Tell me what you’d put on it!

Pirate party games and decorations, part 2!

First up is the little treasure chest, which I made from a box I thrifted for $3, a leather upholstery sample, satin and ribbon from my stash, as well as 1/2 of tiny rivets from my stash that are glued in. Pretty proud of how this one turned out! I ended up filling it with gold and silver themed goodies and it was the prize for the winning team in the scavenger hunt!

Next up were my cannon balls for cannonball toss (cornhole/bags) I used a free fabric ball pattern I found online and scraps of a black twill I had and then scraps of denim and twill for the second “colorful” team. Because I was using scraps, I wasn’t super careful cutting out all pieces on the bias so not all the balls are round, but that’s okay! I also used scrap zipper tape and extra zipper pulls to make them removable (and also so I could hide a scavenger hunt clue in them) and put my existing cornhole bags inside! Nobody played cornhole but it was still fun, and since it ended up part of the scavenger hunt, everyone got to see them!

Next is the cryptexes I made! I am proud of how these turned out, they’re 100% cardstock and glue. I found a free project on cricut and changed it to meet my needs/number of letters. I wrote all the letters out so you could have it spell any number of pirate or ocean themed words, but in a truly conceited manner had the answer as my name. These are a little worse for wear, but have held up great for only being paper! One of my favorite puzzles in the scavenger hunt. I also made a magnet maze and a cipher wheel, along with lock boxes with riddles for the combination, all with materials I already had or thrifted!

Last thing is just a pile of goodies I thrifted. I love a theme, but am not a fan of creating a bunch of waste, so I tried to find as much second hand as I could. The sheet made a perfect tablecloth, and I couldn’t believe I managed to find pirate coins! These are being picked up by someone from our buy nothing page, and I’m happy about how little waste there has been!

Pirate party decorations! I recently celebrated my half birthday with a very fun pirate themed party, and made not only my outfit, but a great many decorations too. One thing about me- I love a theme!

First up are the directional signs- I screwed these into a post pointing every which way, and they turned out so cute! I used a cardboard box and cut it up, painted it to look woody, and then traced the letters with my projector and painted them on, all with acrylic paint! The walk the plank sign was the same method, I had it attached to the entry gate and then a plank set up over a blue tarp for everyone to walk on as they came in!

The giant treasure chest I got off our buy nothing page from someone who had put it out on the curb. It was bright red and the straps were brown, with silver hardware. I repainted it to be a more traditional chest using leftover spray paint and acrylic paint I had from other projects. Unfortunately the blue tape peeled a tiny bit of the brown paint off and I was out, but it still looks great!

Lastly was my pirate treasure map! I found some images online and sketched various parts onto a large piece of craft paper using my projector and then went over it with permanent ink and paint! I tore the edges and aged it with very dilute acrylic paint- I tried tea at first but it wasn’t darkening enough with the already brown paper. There is a spelling error, which was the last thing I wrote on the map, but c’est la vie!

Honestly working on all of this was such a delight. I love sewing but other crafting is also so fun, and it’s great to get to mix it up, and use all the random bits and bobs I’ve collected!

Baby crane quilt! I made this as a gift for my boss, who has just gone out on maternity leave. This idea has been swirling around in my head for a few years now, but I finally had both the skills and the reason to make it! There are some FPP origami crane patterns, but none were the size I wanted, so I decided to make my own! I folded a crane, took approximately 1 million photos, then drafted a pattern from one of them. I did accidentally make a mistake with the seam allowance when I was cutting it out, so the grey background pieces are pieced more than intended, but it worked out! I also didn’t use paper as a foundation, since my pieces were so large. All of the blues and the backing were from my stash, and the grey background was from @sewtopia I did not use any batting in the quilt sandwich, since I wanted it nice and flexible to wrap up bub. I did stitch in the ditch quilting for most of it, with a couple of spots where I crossed pieces for more even quilting! The resulting blanket is 35x44”. Hopefully this brings mom and bub good wishes! #sewing #fpp #babyquilt #fppquilt by @summitdogdesigns

I’ve been hiding these in my close friends stories for the past few weeks, but they are finally done and gifted so I can share!

I’ve had the plywood tops cut to 2x4’ for at least 3 years, and finally got around to finishing them. The tops are 3/4” nominal paint grade plywood, the frames and legs are 2x4s. I got the plywood ripped by Home Depot when I got it, and the holes I cut with my jig saw. The frames and legs were done with my miter saw and after rough cutting the rounds on the legs, I used my freestanding belt sander to smooth them out.

I had bought a small sample can of this purple when my mom painted her front door this color, knowing I wanted to use it for a design for these, but hadn’t decided how. I ultimately decided on a border collie and Aussie, which are my mom’s two favorite dog breeds- my family has had at least one since my parents met! I found some reference images online, converted them to svgs with Inkscape, and projected them onto the boards to sketch out an outline. They were then painted with a combination of acrylic and house paint samples (the black & purple) before being sealed with polyurethane! All in all, a delightful project! Next time, I would trace the outline, paint with a primer, then trace details over it and paint to avoid shrinkage along the edges from the acrylic on wood. And also maybe not take 3+ years to actually do the dang thing! by @summitdogdesigns

It fits a standard bike bottle, phone, and snacks! It will also fit two large tubes and tools, patch kit, and pump! It’s got plenty of spots to connect it to your bike and will fit a variety of set ups- cruisers, e-bikes, mountain bikes, or roadies. Super customizable and fun! Want to learn to make this bag? Check out the link in my bio! I’ve gotten materials for class and decided to whip up a quick sample. This is the #SDDBicycleFeedbag pattern releasing soon! I used a ripstop and recycled vinyl banner from @salvaged_and_sewn for the gusset and outer. The webbing and shock cord is from @makingspacethrift and the mesh and hardware is all from my stash! by @summitdogdesigns

Next up on the poorly fitting shorts- the #ClosetCoreFrankJeans

I’ve made many a pair of ginger jeans, and none of them have a crotch curve that fits well. Was hoping the Frank jeans would be different, but alas, they are not. The crotch curve is very far up in my bits I didn’t even bother to attach the waistband, there simply isn’t enough there for me to fiddle with. I made a straight size 10 (W:29, H:39.25), and used a light weight vintage twill. I LOVE the fabric, it’s super soft and comfy and flexible. I’ll probably try to salvage these into another pair once I pick a pattern that fits a bit better.

The pattern did not come with a shorts cut line, hence my accidental unevenness at the side seam. It did use the same fly construction method as the ginger jeans though, which is my favorite fly construction!

Next up on the journey of poorly fitting shorts, I give you the #GSVolare leggings. I made these for a bike trip that got postponed and they wouldn’t have been brought anyways. I used Emerge from @the.styled.magnolia in Moss, which is a nylon spandex blend. It’s super soft and I like it a lot!

I made a straight size D (W:29, H:39.25” at time of photos), and they’re very loose for what are ostensibly leggings. They ride up terribly in every direction. I did the faux foldover waistband but I find it flips up or out frequently, so I don’t think I would repeat. I usually have a better fit with greenstyle leggings, so I’m really not sure what happened here. I may revisit these as pants because I love the bubble hem on the pattern, but won’t as shorts.

Shorts number 2- #PeppermintSpringShorts I saw @enderallsews make these out of airwave from RBTR and wanted to make my own version! I didn’t love these when I first tried them on, but they’re growing on me in these photos!

I used the same nylon spandex stretch woven from @salvaged_and_sewn as I did my last pair- which is super light and comfy. It’s also impossible to press, so my hem is a little puckery, but c’est la vie! I made the same mod as Alyx did to remove the paper bag waist, otherwise I made a straight size 12. At the time these photos were taken, my waist is 29” and my hip 39.25”, which is between a size 12 and 14 on the size chart. When I cut them out, I was a straight size 12 lol. I’m not loving the look of these on me, but the fit is okay, albeit with a lot of gathering at the front and pulling at the hip. Thinking I probably need to do some sort of sway back adjustment! All in all, a pair I should revisit!

I’ve been on a journey to make shorts that fit this summer, and while it’s been mostly unsuccessful, it’s still been fun!

Decided to start this mini series with the most recent pair, the #PapercutPalisadePants as shorts. I made these with a very lightweight stretch nylon I got at @salvaged_and_sewn that I’m in love with, but unfortunately this pattern isn’t it. The waist is too large and doesn’t gather evenly, the hips are too small, and while the pocket detail is very cool, it’s very heavy when the rest of the pattern is a single layer of lightweight woven. The fit is bad enough I won’t go back and try to fix it, and these will likely be donated instead. Had I double checked reviews, I would have sized up through the hip but alas, I did not. I did appreciate that the pattern came with a shorts cut line!

I made a straight size small, which fit my measurements almost exactly. At the time these photos were taken, waist is 29” and hip 39.25”.
