Bringing my studio to the water.

A couple of summers ago I had the privilege of photographing the people leading the restoration of the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot on Long Island.

The challenge I love: blending real portraiture with a story this big, working between formal setups and the unpredictability of a working expedition on the bay.

The subjects made it easy. Conservation icon Dr. Sylvia Earle. The Stony Brook University scientists leading the eDNA research, headed by Dr. Ellen Pikitch and Christine Santora.

And the Shinnecock Nation partners whose stewardship of these waters stretches back thousands of years. I also got to photograph DataXplorer, a solar-powered uncrewed vessel that samples DNA straight from the water, this blend of conservation, talent and technology is a marvel to witness.

Shinnecock bay is a @mission.blue Hope Spot, carrying @the_explorers_club Flag #132. Grateful to everyone who let me point a camera at them and also to @_magnuskarlsson and @sequoyah.nyc for assisting and @enhancingmoments for the retouch.

Happy Winter Solstice!! I am always grateful for the beauty and blessings of my homelands and capturing the change of each season!! Time to bunker down, disconnect and release all the unnecessary weight from the year!! Hopefully the lessons have been learned and the blessings have been earned!! Hibernation mode has officially begun, catch me in the Spring!!

This spider outside the window has rebuilt this web every day. It’s been cool to see from the safety of my window lol! Beautiful and bigger 😳 each day! Yea it’s time to relocate but I see the lesson here, when your world gets knocked down to square one every day is a new opportunity to rebuild better and stronger than before! Ah yes, makes sense!! I Love it, I get it, I see it!! 😄🕷️🕸️🍂 #SpookySeason #SpiderLessons 😆 #NaturesArt #NewBeginnings by @sun_thewarrior

It was a beautiful day out on Shinnecock Bay sharing history, the work I do and the good medicines of the homelands with students from Suffolk County Community College! We shared some good words and began with a tour of my sister and her husband’s beautiful Shinnecock Homegrown Garden, which provided some delicious vegetables and traditional meals for lunch!! I had some friends/colleagues from Stony Brook University also join to share more details about new technology that we had the opportunity to test in our waters for the very first time in NYS! For quite a few it was their first time being on the water, so it is always great to be apart of that experience and make it one to remember in a good way! Big thanks to my friend Eric who always shows up and provides the kayaks to make this beautiful day possible!! It was a great day and that good medicine (MOSKEHTU) was truly felt!! 🪶☀️🌊🛶 #Shinnecock #ShinnecockBay #ShinnecockBayHopeSpot #Homelands #GoodMedicine #MOSKEHTU by @sun_thewarrior

Did you know that Long Island is home to a local species of pufferfish? Northern Puffers range up and down the east coast and, unlike many other pufferfish, are not poisonous. #pufferfish #northernpuffer taken in Shinnecock Bay by @sun_thewarrior
