Bringing my studio to the water.

A couple of summers ago I had the privilege of photographing the people leading the restoration of the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot on Long Island.

The challenge I love: blending real portraiture with a story this big, working between formal setups and the unpredictability of a working expedition on the bay.

The subjects made it easy. Conservation icon Dr. Sylvia Earle. The Stony Brook University scientists leading the eDNA research, headed by Dr. Ellen Pikitch and Christine Santora.

And the Shinnecock Nation partners whose stewardship of these waters stretches back thousands of years. I also got to photograph DataXplorer, a solar-powered uncrewed vessel that samples DNA straight from the water, this blend of conservation, talent and technology is a marvel to witness.

Shinnecock bay is a @mission.blue Hope Spot, carrying @the_explorers_club Flag #132. Grateful to everyone who let me point a camera at them and also to @_magnuskarlsson and @sequoyah.nyc for assisting and @enhancingmoments for the retouch.

We are so grateful to the talented @felixkunze and his team, who captured our work through incredible photography. Felix, known for his portraits, accompanied us into the field for an @the_explorers_club expedition where we used both cutting edge technology and indigenous wisdom to assess biodiversity in the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot. When he isn’t shooting more glamorous subjects for outlets like Vogue, Felix dedicates his time photographing scientists, environmentalists, and explorers all around the world. From the Stony Brook Southampton wetlab to the marshes of Shinnecock Bay, Felix tells our story through captivating visuals. Happy Native American Heritage Month to all my fellow natives! Even if you grew up disconnected from your culture you have every right to reclaim it and help your people. If you want to be an ally be open minded, educate yourself on Native peoples, learn about issues in native communities, apologize if/when you are wrong and try to be better.

Thank you to @27east for featuring our eDNA expedition on the front page of this week’s western edition of the Southampton Press! We are proud to have partnered with the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot Indigenous Advisory Council, @the_explorers_club @oceanrobotics @mclane_research_labs on making this expedition a success. Our project uses both cutting edge technology and indigenous voices to assess and explore biodiversity in Shinnecock Bay. 📰📰Article link in bio! #shinnecockbay #shinnecockbayrestorationprogram #explore #hopespot #shirp

Did you know that Long Island is home to a local species of pufferfish? Northern Puffers range up and down the east coast and, unlike many other pufferfish, are not poisonous. #pufferfish #northernpuffer

The #smoothdogfish were out in force this week! Our team, volunteers, and interns had a great time working with these beautiful creatures. All sharks were collected under proper research permits and released alive and well.

This week, IOCS visited The Explorers Club for its annual #WorldOceanWeek and officially returned Flag #132, which accompanied us on an autonomous eDNA expedition in #ShinnecockBay in September 2024.

Dr. Ellen Pikitch and Sunshine Gumbs of the Shinnecock Nation were speakers at Monday’s “Big Ideas” session that featured Mission Blue Hope Spots and highlighted our recent expedition work in the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot, in Long Island, New York.
