Check out our new entranceway display that honors the history and founders of the Nabb Research Center with incredible portraits of Mrs. Sylvia Bradley and Dr. Ray Thompson! We wouldn’t be here without the vision these founders laid out in 1982 and all of the support we’ve received from community partners, donors, and researchers along the way. The brief narrative of our history tells the story of 40+ years serving SU and our community in connecting with Delmarva history and culture. Bradley’s portrait was painted by Ava Hudson (UMES ’26) and Thompson’s was painted by Jinchul Kim (SU Art Department). a white text panel with a portrait of Sylvia Bradley on the left and Ray Thompson on the right by @sunabbcenter

Now open! Located on the fourth floor of the Guerrieri Academic Commons, the Nabb Center’s annual exhibit is now open. The exhibit takes a closer look at textiles in the Nabb Center collection. This exhibit explores quilts, clothes, and more across several decades, reading the items as text. By reading textiles as text, we can reconstruct communities of the past. What do these objects tell us about the people who made them or wore them? What stories do these textiles hold? by @sunabbcenter

It's not often that we have a workshop come to us from across the bridge, but last week, our staff and student assistants spent the day in our own classroom, participating in an all-day workshop: Reference Isn't Dead. Led by members of the Maryland State Archives Reference Department, we learned from Rachel Frazier, Darby Nisbett Schini, and Morgan Miller Scarborough (pictured above) about strategies to best support our patrons through our reference services. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with our state partners to help streamline services and advocate for archival access! Thanks Rachel, Morgan, and Darby!

Introducing the new Nabb Center logo!

This new logo will be featured on our letterhead, promotional materials, and website. For the past 10 months, our team has been working to identify what best represents our work and services. With help from SU’s Creative Services and Brand Strategy, we’re ready to step forward with a new look. This logo highlights our collection’s focus on Delmarva history and culture while the graphic represents both the building we call home and the appearance of file folders, or even a book. The logo is simple, yet effective in conveying the mission of the Nabb Research Center. Yesterday we bid a fond "See you around" to our director, Dr. Creston Long. After 10 years of stewardship over the Nabb Center, Dr. Long is returning full time to the SU History department. We wish him the best of luck on this exciting change and can't wait to see him come in with his classes in the fall! Thank you, Creston!

We also welcome Ian Post, our Local History Archivist, as our interim director. We're excited to see where he leads us during this time of transition! Group photo of the Nabb Center staff outside. by @sunabbcenter

From the diaries of Mae Jones, June 7, 1926:
"Oh just think I am home for three months. I can hardly realize it. Yes of course it had to rain, but dad and mother came for me just the same. However we didn’t stay for commencement. I spent: Class dues 1.00 Trunk expressage 2.25 Total 3.25"

Thank you for joining us for this special centennial project! We hope you have enjoyed hearing about Mae's first year at Salisbury State Normal School through her own words. Although we may not be posting more of her entries, you can read the full transcription of Mae Jones' diary (SUA-046) on Internet Archive. We also have more voices from the past in our University Archives, feel free to stop by and explore!
