Art Sonje Center with the Sunpride Foundation presents 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘭, on view from March 20 to June 28.
As suggested by its title—a combination of ”spectrum“, referring both to the phenomenon of light dispersing into rainbow colors and to diversity, and ”synthesis“, the process of bringing ideas and objects together—the exhibition brings together 74 artists who have explored queerness across the boundaries of time, space, and institutions. Centered on Seoul as its site, 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘭 unfolds the present moment of queer art and its future possibilities.

PAPER | In Seoul, Queer Art Steps Into the Light by Lizard

“When Art Sonje Center hosted the first Seoul Queer Film Festival in 1998, we received many calls questioning why an institution like ours would support such a program. Looking back 28 years later, it is clear that society has changed, even if many challenges remain. When Spectrosynthesis Seoul opened, there were no major protests or calls of complaint in the way there had been in the past. That, in itself, suggests a slow but meaningful change.” — Sunjung Kim, curator and director of Art Sonje Center

CiMAM | "Queer art belongs in public institutions as a vital part of contemporary art history"

An interview with Patrick Sun, founder of Sunpride Foundation and CiMAM Patron since 2023.

“Spectrosynthesis has built something far more lasting: a network of relationships and a growing body of scholarship. Together with press reviews and essays, the catalogue each iteration produces helps document queer art histories in ways that didn't exist before—archiving fragments, recovering erased narratives, and creating a vital record for future researchers. I also believe this series has given real courage to artists working in places where queer expression remains difficult.”

[Dew Kim - The 13th Busan Biennale]

PODIUM is proud to share that Dew Kim’s (@dew_needs_you) site-specific installation ‘The Stage – After God’ (2026) is currently on view at the 13th Busan Biennale (@busanbiennale). This iteration is co-curated by Amal Khalaf (@amalandaplan) and Evelyn Simons (@evelyn_simons).

Dew Kim transforms the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and the former Busan Nam High School into a single, three-act pilgrimage. Across these linked spaces, the work traces how marginalised bodies absorb the costs of blind faith, dogmatic idolatry, and desire; and what persists once objects of worship have vanished and no clear point of orientation remains. Here, Kim choreographs a passage through absence: from the sacrifice of an offering, through an empty centre, to the emergence of a new order.

Co-commissioned by Sunpride Foundation (@sunpridefoundation) and Busan Biennale Organising Committee, 2026.
This work has been made possible with the generous support of Patrick Sun, founder of Sunpride Foundation.

Act 1: The Stage of Blood – The Aesthetics of Sacrifice (MoCA Busan)

An altar-like stage holds a cross-shaped microphone stand and is clad in latex bas-reliefs bearing the silhouettes of queer and shamanic figures. As a pipe organ “exhales,” the latex surface compresses, revealing fossil-like imprints of these bodies. The surrounding emptiness and suspension evoke ritual tension, suggesting that such violence continues to reverberate quietly through everyday life—woven into gestures that still depend on the kneeling of some to confirm the power of others.

F or more than ten years, @sunpridefoundation has championed LGBTQ+ artists while building a collection designed to be activated through exhibitions and institutionaFor more than ten years, Sunpride Foundation has championed LGBTQ+ artists while building a collection designed to be activated through exhibitions and institutional collaborations.

Founded by Patrick Sun, CIMAM Patron since 2023, Sunpride recently concluded the fourth edition of the "Spectrosynthesis" series at Art Sonje Center in Seoul, co-curated by CIMAM Board member Sunjung Kim and Yongwoo Lee and featuring over 70 artists exploring LGBTQ+ perspectives and related themes.

In this interview, Sun speaks about why international networks like CIMAM are essential for museums navigating a time of growing social fragmentation, and how institutional collaboration can turn queer art from a special interest into a vital part of contemporary art history.
