Everyone in The Devils is incredible but waking up this morning - I love seeing all the unbridled excitement over not only Oliver Reed but Michael Gothard - 55 years later and they're still setting the nunnery and, apparently, the world on fire by @sunsetgun

Thanks to @selfstyledsiren for posting this on her twitter.

What an incredible first paragraph. And that first sentence! How great to read Damon Runyon in your morning newspaper back in 1927. by @sunsetgun

Wow. A present from a dear friend:

Veronica Lake's pilot license & two of her lighters. This is very special indeed.

Lake got her pilot's license while married to André De Toth.

She wrote in her autobiography:

"Lifting the little Navion off always gave me a sensation of freedom, freedom of earth’s tenacious hold on you. You push forward on the throttle and there begins a battle against what nature intended. The wheels fight to free themselves of the runway’s hold, their ally the wings and the engine striving together to force enough air under the wings for lift, buoyancy, clear flight into air’s vast void. You win the battle and freedom is yours. Everything falls below, toy-like, and the clouds beckon you like marshmallow puffs in a fairy tale. I’ve screamed with delight on take-off, cursed the inherent limitations of its duration and fallen sullen when the tingling stopped and the thrill dissipated."

When she and De Toth split up she went into a "three month hibernation" in a cabin in the St. George Mountain in the Sierras. Veronica wrote:

"I came down off the mountain, packed up what was left and flew to New York with the children. As corny and overly dramatic as it may sound, I actually did utter an official farewell to Hollywood as I stood ready to board the plane. 'The hell with you, Hollywood,' I said to myself. 'And fuck you too.'" by @sunsetgun

This Friday! September 11 - I will be discussing one of my favorites - Henry Hathaway's "Niagara" at the Academy Museum for the ongoing Marilyn Monroe series. Come in for a 2:30 matinee & enjoy Marilyn, Joseph Cotten, Jean Peters and Casey Adams in this gorgeous, dark & demented dream of a movie.
