My 25 Favourite Films of 2021 - PART 4 (10-1)

#10 - Joachim Trier's THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD; a great blend of comedy and drama used to explore the feelings of aimlessness in modern day life.

#9 - Mike Mills' C'MON C'MON; a compassionate and charming warm hug of a film that asks prescient questions about society while still remaining endearing.

#8 - Sean Baker's RED ROCKET; an unflinchingly cynical comedy-drama that contrasts bright, candy coloured photography with a dark and uncomfortably honest look at human selfishness which features a truly magnetic lead performance from Simon Rex.

#7 - Guillermo del Toro's NIGHTMARE ALLEY

#6 - Denis Vileneuve's DUNE: PART ONE

#5 - Paul Thomas Anderson's LICORICE PIZZA

#4 - Edgar Wright's LAST NIGHT IN SOHO

#3 - James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD

#2 - Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY

#1 - Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG

I didn't write anything for my top 7 films because I'd rather write about their collective impact on me. I've always loved seeing films on the big screen, but the pandemic has really heightened my appreciation for that and made me much more passionate about seeing a film in the cinema whenever I can. I was lucky enough to see all 7 of these films in a cinema, and as a result I was able to be fully immersed in the stories being told by these brilliant filmmakers. I adore films of all sizes, and there are numerous lower-budget and independent films on my top 25. But what these 7 films have made me realise is just how much I truly love big budget, large scale studio films when they are well crafted and made with care. They're the type of epic films that represent what cinema can be when a storyteller is able to tell the story they wanns tell with a big budget (whether it's a 40 million western or a 180 million sci-fi film). They're the type of films I hope I can one day make and seeing them in a cinema, as well as rewatching them all numerous times at home, has rejuvenated my love for film in a way and reminded me of how great these big Hollywood films can be when they're made by skilled and mature artists.
Last year was an incredible year for cinema and I've really enjoyed celebrating it 🙂

What I will cherish above all from @ebertfest 2022 are the marvelous conversations I had with such people as Terry Zwigoff, Melissa Axelrod, Thora Birch, Michael Benton Adler, @krishafairchild, @azazeljacobs, @jeremyungar, Michael Phillips, Brenda Butler, @ziocicciocinema, @mellymelbatista, @nminow, @nickallen_redux, @brian_tallerico and all the wonderful audience members who have—along with @chazebert and @nkohn—kept the spirit of Roger and his festival entirely intact. The invaluable remembrances of the late great Gilbert Gottfried shared by the audience to his widow @daragottfried (who joined the Q&A virtually on the big screen, which she playfully lampooned by briefly mimicking a monster) are a testament to the thoughtfulness and humanism fostered by Roger. At the end of his illuminating taped interview with @sunsetgun, @realgdt mirrored everyone’s thoughts when he said, “Nothing makes me happier than the journey to Champaign, Illinois.” (Shout-out to the great @fenianchick, whom Kim and Guillermo spotlighted). I am now leaving on the train with my heart overflowing.
