This is us today. Here's to carbs and no shopping tomorrow. by @sunshineguerrilla

We are going to have our tiniest Christmas ever.

Every dollar we spend is a vote for the world we want. Right now, it feels like every dollar we spend is a vote of complicity, that it sends the message what is happening is alright enough.

In this moment, nothing could be more effective than refusing to give our money to the corporations and systems that are working against us. Last year, Americans spent about 929 billion dollars in this season. On average, about 1,000 dollars is spent per person on gifts alone. If everyone who is furious at the current state of our country committed to spending half that (or less) this year, it would be a profound statement.

Protesting is important. Reaching out to leaders is important. But these leaders don't care about us, they only want our money. So why are we giving it to them?

For this reason, we are trying to have our least spending holiday ever. I want to invite you to join us and make this season about connection and memories, not consumerism.

We told our kids we are doing this last night. I told them about SNAP, about how so many people are struggling to get by, and for that reason we are going to do fewer gifts this year, and give the money to food banks instead. I am so glad I told them and that they are thinking about this. We are usually comfortable with giving to others, but it can get uncomfortable to know you get less. I am proud of them for understanding how important this is.

For other adults, we are planning on making gifts. For our kids, I am leaning on Buy Nothing and secondhand shopping (ebay, thriftbooks, and even facebook

There are so many ways to take a stand in this moment. There is a whole blackout week for black friday, when we can all avoid shopping. We can boycott companies that pay so little their employees need snap, like Walmart, Target, and Amazon. We can give experience gifts or gifts of service. Pick new traditions that aren't gift exchanges. Only shop at local small businesses. Buy gift cards from local grocery. Give donations as gifts. Do our shopping now to boycott Black Friday on. No new decor.

The world looks different this year, so our celebrations should change too. by @sunshineguerrilla

Tokyo 🌈🐱

I am going to say, for the sake of honesty, that bringing a terrible two-ing toddler to a culture that deeply values quiet and personal space was maybe the meanest thing we have ever done to ourselves.

We are having so much fun, and Japan is beautiful, i just want to be real that it's been a challenge too! by @sunshineguerrilla
