This house has been one of my longest creative projects. And I'm so proud it's been so thoughtfully featured as the October cover story in AD Italia! Check it out - link in bio.

We arrived in the Hudson Valley from Texas, summer of 2022. In the years that followed, from the ground up — I designed, permitted, built, (yes I was the General Contractor) decorated, and made every aspect of our new digs. Talk about decision fatigue.

Now, with only a 30' commute from home to studio, work and life blur together.

The questions I ask in the studio follow me home. What deserves to stay? What carries a story? What can a wall hold besides art? My home became the first place where many of those questions could be answered without compromise.

I could experiment and make my most personal work. It feels like my best work - work that does not seek approval. Art that resonates.

In a clearing in the woods, Sunshine Thacker has created a retreat entirely her own. Surrounded by nature, the house brings ceramics - the material at the heart of the artist and designer’s practice - into its architecture, shaping an intimate and unexpected domestic landscape.

Hand-painted walls, handcrafted objects, and richly textured surfaces define a place conceived for feeling safe, slowing down, and surrounding oneself with beauty. A home that seems to be made from the very stuff of dreams. by @sunshinethackerstudio

Children draw differently. There is no hesitation between seeing and making. My son’s early drawings have that freedom, lines that don’t ask permission to exist, expression that is out of this world!

When I translated some of them into ceramic and objects for our home, I didn’t want to improve them. I wanted to protect what was already there. His hand. At that age. At that moment. Perhaps preserving something doesn’t mean keeping it untouched. Sometimes it means giving it another life.

There is something deeply personal about opening the doors of ones home. This place I gave my whole being to for the past four years.

The October issue of AD Italia is dedicated to materiality and artisan craftsmanship. Something I care deeply about and bring to my practice with every commission. Making work that resonates in the soul begins with love and respect for the material and whether its clay, wood or steel every materials’ properties can be manipulated. Take it too far and the results are disastrous. Honor their constraints and you will find a beautiful result.

I’d like to thank my husband Brett. He trusted me to make a home we are both in love with. All he wanted in return was a basketball goal. Baby you’ve got it! We made a family together, thank you! You’re the best part of living the life I’ve always dreamed of. Ti amo!

Additionally I’m particularly grateful to Amir Capogrossi Badreddine of ADItalia. @amircapogrossi His enthusiasm for our home was unmatched and through the process of championing my vision, he became a friend.

For a girl from the sticks who swooned over the pages of Architectural Digest and dreamed of one day dressing like the Ralph Lauren models on its pages, being on AD Italia’s October cover is a true pinch-me moment!

As the GC, I made or supervised every decision, every measurement and every trade. Each mural, every single tile, made with my own hands. I sourced the fabrics, designed the rugs, made the textile headboards and quilts. I wore all the hats — from architecture, landscape design, permitting, purchasing agent and quality control. If it’s in this house or on this property I directed it, designed it, or personally made it. Needless to say, it was a LOT and I’m glad that’s over and I get to enjoy and appreciate this labor of LOVE!

I’m gratefull to share it with you.

This home was assembled slowly, through living. Things arrived because we loved them. Others stayed because they carried a memory. Some I made, or designed.
Some were made by people I love, artists I admire. Parts of the whole might only make sense to us.

And that might be my favorite thing about home. It doesn’t have to explain itself to anyone.

OUR HOME! in AD ITALIA
ON NEWSTANDS TODAY!

The disciplined aesthetic of Italian and Scandinavian furnishings is softened by pieces Thacker has crafted over the years. The master bedroom’s headboard is the most striking example: a ceramic wall installation that pays homage to Hokusai and celebrates domestic devotion, symbolized by a pair of cranes.

Who and what do we hold dear?
What is the difference between sentimentality and nostalgia?
Is it what we keep, or how we keep it?
In our hearts?
In our homes?
In our gestures?
How do we express our grattitude?
How do we express our love, our concern our remorse?

For me its in the permanence of making.
Welcome to my world.
Welcome to our home.

What doesn’t break you makes you stronger.

And so it goes with building a home.
Especially when you have an uncompromising vision.
It will test your resolve. Your marriage. Your resources.

And I mean ALL of them, emotional, financial, spiritual.

When you have run the gauntlet and lived in a rental that drives you crazy, cried yourself to sleep — too many times to count, yelled at the top of your lungs, seriously contemplated calling that divorce attorney and make it out on the other side...

Grateful isn’t just a word. It’s something you embody.
And that home isn’t just a shelter. It’s a refuge full of love.

I’m eternally grateful to my main squeeze — the one and only Brett Thacker @bmtbayouboy for doing this thing called life and living and adventuring with me. You will always be my safe harbor. Ti amor.
