WHERE EARTH BECOMES HOME
Sunshine Thacker | A Sanctuary of Craft and Nature

Hidden within a clearing in the woods, artist and designer Sunshine Thacker has created a home where architecture, nature, and craftsmanship exist in quiet harmony.

More than a residence, the space becomes an extension of the artist’s creative world, where ceramics move beyond decorative objects to become an integral part of the architectural language.

Hand-painted walls, sculptural forms, and richly textured surfaces transform the interior into an intimate landscape of colour and materiality. Every detail celebrates the imperfections and individuality of the handmade, revealing the beauty of objects shaped by human touch.

At the heart of the project lies a dialogue between art and architecture. Ceramic elements introduce organic forms and tactile richness, while handcrafted objects and expressive surfaces create an atmosphere that feels both playful and deeply personal.

Surrounded by nature, the home embraces a slower rhythm of living. Rather than separating the interior from its environment, the design appears to grow from the same creative spirit that shapes the surrounding landscape.

Here, craftsmanship is not simply a finishing detail. It becomes the foundation of a home where imagination, material, and everyday life are inseparable.

A reminder that the most meaningful spaces are not always defined by perfection, but by the stories, textures, and human gestures that make them feel alive.

Tucked away in a woodland clearing, Sunshine Thacker has created a deeply personal retreat. Ceramics—the material at the heart of her work as an artist and designer—flow naturally into the architecture, shaping a home that feels both intimate and wonderfully unexpected.

The hand-painted walls, handcrafted details and richly layered surfaces create a place made for slowing down and living surrounded by beauty. I find this home utterly enchanting—it feels as though it has been dreamt into existence

This house has been one of my longest creative projects. And I'm so proud it's been so thoughtfully featured as the October cover story in AD Italia! Check it out - link in bio.

We arrived in the Hudson Valley from Texas, summer of 2022. In the years that followed, from the ground up — I designed, permitted, built, (yes I was the General Contractor) decorated, and made every aspect of our new digs. Talk about decision fatigue.

Now, with only a 30' commute from home to studio, work and life blur together.

The questions I ask in the studio follow me home. What deserves to stay? What carries a story? What can a wall hold besides art? My home became the first place where many of those questions could be answered without compromise.

I could experiment and make my most personal work. It feels like my best work - work that does not seek approval. Art that resonates.
