sunshy is a shoegaze/noise pop band based in Chicago. Originally formed as a duo by Korean American musician Wesley Park and Chinese musician Sascha (Haoshu) Deng, the project later expanded into a full five-piece band.

The band first gained wider attention through their 2023 singles On the Train and dissolve, with dissolve in particular becoming one of their most well-known tracks. Deeply influenced by bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, sunshy channel a genuine love for classic shoegaze into every part of their music.

What makes sunshy resonate with listeners, however, goes far beyond simply recreating the sound of 1990s shoegaze. Rather than treating the genre as nostalgia, they fold Asian immigrant experiences, bedroom recording aesthetics, harsh noise textures, and the cross-pollination of Chicago’s DIY underground into a sound that feels distinctly their own.

Their music feels like a worn VHS tape filled with fragments of youth: blurry, loud, intimate, and strangely comforting. Through that sincerity, sunshy reminds listeners why we love shoegaze so much.

🩵Please note: sunshy will be performing at the Slide Away Music Festival @slideawayfest this week, May 23rd! taken in Shenzhen by @sunshyily

Shortly after last year's Windy Pop Weekender, Sunshy @sunshyily opened up for @thepainsofbeingpureatheart at @emptybottle. Their set knocked our socks off AND left us envious of their guitar decorations (🐈‍⬛🪄 scroll), and we added them to our 2026 fest wish list. The dream (pop) became reality and they're playing on Sunday 9/27 - Get yr 🎟️ in our prof! 🫶🏼

sunshy is the punchy, dynamic Chicago noise-pop project of guitarist-vocalist Haoshu Sascha Deng, guitarist-vocalist Wesley Park, drummer Eric Breden, bassist Gwen Giedeman, and synth/multi-instrumentalist Jordan Zamansky. They released their home-recorded, self-produced debut album, I don’t care what comes next, with Longinus Recordings in 2024, and was named “one of the most compelling bands of the ongoing Shoegaze resurgence” by Leor Galil @therealimleor of the Chicago Reader. taken in Subterranean by @sunshyily

AN EASY AND SIMPLE TUTORIAL ON HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE WORD SUNSHY

4th sunshy show in the bag, first one with my #bigboycamera! Truly no better setting to see this band than in a hot as fuck sweaty ass basement (shoutout to lowdown), I left with my sweat glands empty and my heart full! It was great to talk to so many people i otherwise wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for this band, the chicago indie scene is a gift that truly keeps on giving. Thank you to the band for always putting up with my weird fucking photo ideas, it’s such an honor to channel my creativity through you! Until next time for show number five :)

This week we are sliding in with.. @sunshyily who are answering “What’s the most meaningful experience you’ve ever had with music?”

If you like shoegaze that’s both exquisitely catchy and lusciously textured, then you need to stop what you’re doing right now and listen to Sunshy. The Chicago band’s 2024 debut, ‘I don’t care what comes next,’ is one of the finest ‘gaze records of this decade, and they’ve built up quite a reputation on the live circuit playing shows with legends like The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Alison’s Halo. This year, Sunshy will make their Slide Away debut Saturday May 23rd in Chicago.— and tickets are sold out. Next time Sunshy play your city, don’t sleep.

Sliding In”, a Q&A series hosted by @chasingsundays.blog. Chasing Sundays is a music blog written by Eli Enis that publishes real music criticism, essays, and interviews.
