As with any stray cat, it’s hard to say exactly when super glou was born but sometime around Halloween 2018 is as good a guess as any. The math means we’re now turning 8 and we’d love to celebrate with you 🐈‍⬛ 🍷

We’ve been talking a lot lately about how we don’t like to be singled out as women in wine. Why, instead of being female-this, female-that, can’t we just be winemakers, sommeliers, wine shop owners, importers and distributors? As we discussed in an interview with @domestiquewine, there’s a danger of tokenizing. We quoted the wise @alessandra_divella: “they never say ‘it’s a man-owned company’” when the founders are dudes.

That being said, on our latest tour with Alessandra, we looked around and noticed that most of the people hosting us, driving us around, championing the cause of a tiny but powerful producer from an overlooked part of the world, happened to be women. There were wonderful men too, of course, but for once they were outnumbered 😉 and they seemed totally fine with that.

We are proud to work with some of the fiercest babes in the biz. Thanks for showing us how it’s done, and thanks to everyone who showed up to support, drink and share in the experience. taken in East Coast USA by @super_glou

Saturday 10/24 join us for a trifecta of happiness as we celebrate the launch of our dear friend Lisa’s @brass__tacks newest book with @phaidonpress and welcome the brilliant duo Constance and Damien as they bring their restaurant @nativebonjour from Lastres Spain to C. Cassis for one day only. As though you could even handle more Jenn @super_glou and the guys of @vandal.wine.nada @les_salicaires are doing a preview tasting of their generous lively wines.

It is open to the public and we’ll do our best to save room for walk-ins, but do make a reservation from our site if you want to ensure you have a space to be. Reservations are $10 and include a welcome pour and a pintxo. Books are also available for preorder there and there will be signing plus a chance of a few surprise performances.

We love our winemakers like family because they are family.

I was able to visit just a few of my favorite people on a « harvest decompression tour » through Lombardia, Champagne and Catalunya (to clarify, I didn’t do any harvesting, I just appeared for the decompression). On balance, wine was enjoyed in moderation.

We often talk about how we can understand just as much about the wine by visiting the winemaker’s kitchen or their living room, spending time with their kids and animals, as we can by stepping foot in the cellar.

There’s the winemaker apart from the wine - their effervescence, their spirit, the pleasure of being together.

They say a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. The sky was opening, the smoke was holding, the streets were flooding. Lo and behold, this crew docked the ship and launched a wine.

« Is Calce real ? » is a question that loomed large in our heat-addled brains as we roamed the sun-drenched stretches of the Roussillon. The village of Calce, a dart thrown in the bullseye of our orbit, shimmered like a mirage, beckoning us across the border as we pingponged between the French and Spanish sides of Catalunya.

A geological oddity, an accident of shifting tectonic plates, Calce seems to radiate a greater air of mystery the more often you return to it. Even the otherwise pragmatic Jean-Philippe Padié, who has been making wine here for more than twenty years, hesitated to answer. « I don’t know if Calce is real, » he demurred. « Is it ? »

The quality of the place, the texture, that feeling of summertime noir which permeates the streets, owes something very real to the amount of wine spewing from its cellars and the personalities shifting around it.

From this beautiful mess of marl, schist and limestone, we bring you three new arrivals.

When Jean-Philippe came into our lives two years ago, we knew we’d done something right. A gentle, romantic soul with a penchant for fantastic winemaking, JPP has a visceral way of describing terroir that sticks with you. On schist: « it makes you feel something dark. At the beginning, it’s shy, tense, a little animal. With schist you must be patient. »

We met Perrine a few years ago when she was just launching her project, and we’ve loved watching the wines evolve into what they are today. « You can feel the intensity of Calce, » she says. « Sun, rocks, salt, wind. »

Located spiritually within the village if not geographically, Les Salicaires is a beacon toward the sea, perched practically on the coastline. A visit with Vincent is the antidote to every hangover earned with his friends in Calce. Our favorite fisherman-winemaker always has the cure for what ails us, whether it’s a salty, mineral Grenache blanc, a brooding Grenache Gris, or a bright, life-affirming Syrah.
