Mostly just enjoyed myself the past two nights in Raleigh, with no intentions of “making content,”but couldn’t help cutting up a little something of one of my all-time faves, and NC legends as far as I’m concerned, @kooleyhighnc. Been attending, enjoying, and filming these guys’ shows since I was in college, and not stopping now. More post-Hop thoughts later. For now, sleep.

Summer 2016 in Durham. You just had to be there. But if you weren’t, that’s cool too—because Young Bull is doing it all again a decade later, at the same place where it started.

This Saturday at MotorCo, @unclemique @solomonthefox & Co. are back celebrating ten years of their debut album, Sopadelic—the no-skips project that, right out of high school, immediately turned heads and established them on the Bull City (and NC) scene. Even better, doing it with @mellowswells and @deviants919, two groups shaping the next generation in 919 music, just as YB did back in the day. If you were there at the beginning, you know how special this night is going to be. If you weren’t? Don’t miss history a second time.

NEW ON THE BLOG ▪️The AI-ification of music (and arts generally) taking place all around us may feel like an unstoppable, inevitable force—not to mention, in the case of Tyga and Fenix Flexin, an unbearably corny one too. But beyond the justifiable hand-wringing, @hazrdpay sees reason for hope. And it’s in the cultivation of vibrant, local scenes like those we have right here in NC.

“Local scenes live and die by not just authenticity, but more importantly accountability,” he writes. “You have to show up, perform, collaborate, sell merch, talk to listeners, and return to the same rooms.”

A day after the release of her new song, “Apple Juice” (w/ Durham’s own @groovesince1989), it seems only right to celebrate @rapsody, and the 15 year anniversary of “Thank H.E.R. Now,” first released in the now-distant summer of 2011.

In terms of overall Rapsody mixtapes it may be overshadowed by the quality and sheer star power of “She Got Game” (2013), but Thank H.E.R. Now remains a major NC hip-hop release worth remembering today. There’s a carefree spirit to the project that feels representative of the era it comes from, and the prevailing attitude of so much true-school blog era rap at the time—not to mention timestamp shoutouts like LRG clothing and the 2009 XXL Freshmen list. It also boasts an impressive roster of guest features, fitting for someone who’d go on to be one of the most collaborative emcees in hip-hop, both with her peers and legends alike.

Alongside all the new releases you’re staying up on, and in anticipation of a new Rap album later this month, take a trip down memory lane by spinning THN (it’s on DSPs). And come back soon for another episode of #SEarchives 💿 #nchiphop by @superemptync
