In a gist: To save her starving village, Wei Yin, daughter of a poor rice farmer, offers herself as a concubine to Terren, heir to the Azalea Dynasty with the magic ability to control blades. In the palace, she secretly learns a poetry-based magic forbidden to women called literomancy, in order to survive those that wish her harm ... including the violent prince.

Give me an underdog navigating court intrigue and I will sign up in a heartbeat. Primarily a tale of a young woman's rise to power, debut author Shen Tao is determined to shatter expectations (and hearts) by weaving in palace lore and backstories that are essential for Wei and the killing poem spell she is crafting. To win such a high-stakes game, one has to *really* know the rest of the players.

I'm deeply impressed with the complexity that Shen thoughtfully includes in many of her characters. Feelings towards others can be complicated, and motivations are not always clear cut. TPE fully embraces this.

This is a dark novel, in terms of graphic violence and assault. I would compare the on-page brutality (both depiction & recounting from memory) as on par with The Poppy War trilogy. But they're all for a purpose, showing the lengths that people go to wrench power and hold onto it. TPE then asks, is this a legacy worth preserving?

Since I've been asked this a couple of times, I figured I compiled a post! In a gist: I'm subscribed to a number of book boxes and trawl online stores. 🤗

Special features of these books include redesigned covers, foiled / illustrated hardbacks, artwork on the endpapers, or at the very least sprayed/printed edges. Sometimes, they come with the author's signature too. ✨

🩺 𝙎𝙏𝙍𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙀 𝙁𝘼𝙈𝙄𝙇𝙄𝘼𝙍𝙎 🐈 by @/keshewrites

THE GIST: Two rival scholars of magical veterinary science find their final year of college rocked with chaos when unexplained surges of excess magic lead to explosions and animal familiars going feral.

✨REVIEW (1/3):✨

TBH, I'm surprised I didn't DNF this. But the overarching mystery-plot + magical animals + veterinary uni stuff kept me back in. Props to author Keshe Chow because romance aside? All the other stuff IS interesting.

Gwen is a solid protag (once I overlook the brainrot over the mediocre man she's contractually obligated to have the hots for). I like her drive to succeed, her love for animals, and her loyalty to her friends.

🦷 TEETH-PULLING ROMANCE

Unfortunately, it's the type I dislike reading so much that I now avoid any novel marketed with Enemies to Lovers. (I tend to have a better experience if it's marketed as Rivals to Lovers like this one was, but I guess every once in a while, the universe throws a curveball at me.)

It's the formula of: man is insufferable to the female protag, there's mutual loathing, yet physical attraction negates all that!! It's so shallow. Being distracted by a hot guy in such circumstances bores me. Eyeroll-worthy. Makes me want to shake Gwen's shoulders and go PLS have some self-respect!! Hey remember when privileged snob Harrisford was a condescending asshole to you? I sure don't, because I'm already rooting for his downfall in your honour.

🦷 I COULD'VE AVOIDED THIS DENTIST TRIP

What grates me is the *timing* of all the romantic development is just absurdly off. Why shove in this physical attraction so early when they were going to work together to investigate the mysterious power surges? Why couldn't attraction set in AFTER they actually spend those meaningful moments meant to foster better mutual understanding? They also suck at communicating, and communication is THE thing that gets me rooting for two people to be together.

✨REVIEW (1/2)✨

AN AUCTION OF SOULS is the start of Amber Chen's sophomore YA duology. As a whole, I had a blast with this xianxia quest-style adventure!

It starts out pretty straightforward: Lingxi & her companions have to procure three specific items in exchange for information on where her grandmother is kept hostage. Yes they're on a time crunch. In each location, we come across adversarial obstacles (because of course it can't be that easy!) and learn more about the world's lore of immortals & demons. Aside from mystical objects, there's also reincarnation (👀) and a past earthshaking war between the realms (👀👀).

I personally enjoyed Lingxi as our protag. Was her introduction to us in the first chapter portraying her in an unscrupulous light? Sure, but I thought that was a trait that made her interesting rather than off-putting, especially when soon after we get to see her true motivation of wanting to earn so much money. (Also she's swindling the rich, not people in poverty. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

As expected, her callousness does come back to bite her in the ass, which made for an opportunity for gro by @supergirled

September was the month of redemption: I started re-reading two books that I was initially lukewarm about but could see the potential, and I'm enjoying them SO much more now. I also completed my 80th book for the year!!

Because I don't gatekeep where I get my books. 🙌🏼 Having spoken to multiple locals who don't know of Blackwells.co.uk in the first place, just sharing my main source for standard hardbacks after Book Depository was shut down.

Given the average hardback here in SG is around $48 onwards (if they'e even sold here at all; paperbacks are more common!), Blackwells is my go-to source as it's easier on the wallet. 🙂‍↕️ These are just some hardbacks I'd gotten from there. 📚

Happy first anniversary to the release of @jihyunyunwrites's AND THE RIVER DRAGS HER DOWN! 💖🎂🎉

This was an eeriely gripping and deeply emotional YA horror novel that I knew was an instant 5🌟 after I was done bawling. 🥹 Are you in the mood to read about necromancy as an allegory for unresolved grief & the inability to let go? What about complicated sisterhood, Eldest Asian Daughter trauma, and vengeance towards the men who've done them wrong? Look no further. 💀

And since it's October, it makes for the perfect atmospheric spooky read. 🌊 (Pssst @nlbsingapore has it in physical, ebook & audio!)

💌 DEDICATED TO THE AUTHOR'S FAMILY

This began with author Autumn Krause wanting to tell her family's story of being prejudicially forced into camps by the US government during WWII. What arose from this is a heartfelt love letter and commemoration to the resilience of her great-grandparents, grandparents, and extended relatives.

TGWSOS' raw portrayal of the atrocities that Japanese Americans were subjected to is heart wrenching: the humiliating and barebones living conditions of the barracks, the degradation by the administration and other civilians who see Japanese people as lesser, and the callous tearing apart of families (sometimes even permanently).

💝 TEENAGE LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

The romance between Ren & Violet is of course the focal point of the novel, that kicked off the moment they first laid eyes on each other.

Ren is the greenest of flags. It would've been easy to portray him as a ~brash, temperamental Bad Boy~ given his history of juvenile delinquency. But he's always courteous to Violet, his teasing is gentle and never cruel, he gifts her with origami that he folds himself, and he deduces Violet's favourite colour through her hair ribbon alone. It stems from the fact that Ren is a very caring boy whose love for the female figures with a hand in raising him—his older sister Emi and even his emotionally neglectful mother—never wavers.

Violet's altruism won me over as well: Without even considering if it'd jeopardise her chances, she included Ren's pregnant and ill sister in her plea while bargaining with the god Akira to secure her father's safety. And when Violet hurts Ren's feelings by lying about their dynamic to her disapproving mother, she makes up for it by apologizing for her thoughtlessness. Sub by @supergirled

Deena Helm's debut impresses me with her beautifully immersive prose and a heartbreakingly intriguing concept. I'm definitely looking forward to her future works.

🍉 EXPECT MULTI-POVs + DUAL TIMELINES

The novel switches between multiple POVs and two timelines in 2002 [the story's present year] & 1948 [flashbacks]:

1) Marina, a mixed Palestinian-American,
2) Haifa, Marina's mother who is named after the city,
3) Nuhad, Marina's grandmother who was forcibly displaced during the Nakba,
4) Rania, Nuhad's childhood best friend who remained in Palestine,
5) the sentient haunted house where Nuhad lived in.

🍉 DAUGHTER, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER

As a first-time visitor to Palestine, Marina is our audience surrogate who witnesses firsthand the violence that Palestinians live through on the daily at the hands of their oppressors. She's also the one who interacts with the haunted house the most, such as "seeing" the memories embedded in its walls.

While Marina has a solid, supportive dynamic with her mother, the same cannot be said about Haifa. If you find complicated mother-daughter dynamics where the mother projects onto her child compelling, then Haifa's POV will grip you.

Marina & Haifa's present-day perspectives offer a look at the trickling effects of intergenerational trauma that diaspora experience. There is great lament and a sense of hopelessness on their ends on how they lack a connection to their Palestinian heritage, which began with the stifling and tight-lipped way a grieving Nuhad raised Haifa in America.

Interestingly, Nuhad's POV are only flashback chapters of her life as a teen, set just before and right after the Nakba. In the present, it's been a few months since Nuhad's passing, and everything we know of her from then on is through the lens of her daughter & granddaughter. She haunts the narrative (literally too).
