In the lanes of Puri, mythology doesn’t stay on pages — it walks the streets.

Sahi Jata is a centuries-old street theatre where each sahi (street) becomes a stage. Every neighbourhood takes pride in portraying one character from the Ramayana —
Rama in one lane, Ravana in another, Hanuman, and many more — each performed with devotion, discipline, and deep community spirit.

What makes Sahi Jata unique is that it is not performed by trained actors, but by local families who inherit these roles across generations. The masks — made from wood, mud, and papier-mâché — are sacred, crafted with patience, prayer, and purpose.

When I witnessed Sahi Jata at the Puri Mahotsav,
I was reminded how living traditions continue to shape our art and identity. That same spirit, emotion, and storytelling found its way onto the walls of Azydo @azydo_ — as a tribute to Odisha’s timeless cultural soul.

Gosani Jatra 2026 | A little guide to Puri’s centuries-old celebration

Did you know that Puri’s Gosani tradition is often traced back to the medieval Ganga dynasty, particularly the period of King Chodaganga Deva?

Over the centuries, different sahis developed their own traditions of worship, giving each Gosani her own name, identity and fascinating local stories.

📍 Some Famous Gosanis to explore in Puri:

🌺 Kakudikhai Gosani – Baniyapati, Bali Sahi
🌺 Janhikhai Gosani – Janhimundia Chaka, Dolamandap Sahi
🌺 Barabati Gosani – Harachandi Sahi

One Mother, many traditions - Odisha’s Sashti in the morning, Tamil Golu by night, all in green. This is the India I love, where every home celebrates in its own way. And blessed to experience in dubai too.. Jai Maa Durga! 🙏

Sashti is the sixth day of Navratri and the day Durga Puja begins in Odisha. The Goddess is awakened (bodhan), invited into the bilva tree, and her idols are unveiled for the first time. From Puri to Cuttack, the dhak and conch shells announce that Maa has arrived.

Green is the Navratri colour for today, Friday. It stands for new beginnings, growth and prosperity, and it matches the bilva leaf at the heart of today’s rituals.

I’m wearing it to a friend’s Golu, the Tamil Navratri tradition where families arrange dolls on odd-numbered steps. The dolls depict gods, goddesses, stories from the epics and scenes of everyday life, and friends and neighbours are invited home for prayers, songs, sundal and thamboolam. It’s a way of welcoming the Goddess into the home and sharing the festival.

Happy 2nd October, Happy AZYDO day

And today, more than anything else, we just want to say THANK YOU.

To every guest who chose us.
To everyone who came back.
To those who recommended us to friends and family.
To every person who shared a picture, sent us a message, left us a beautiful review, or simply told us, “We didn’t feel like leaving.”

You have no idea how much every little word has meant to us.

This first year has given us memories we will keep forever — and we are already looking forward to welcoming so many of you again and again and again.

There is still so much we want to discover.
