Held In Between is a spatial installation that invites touch, embrace, and the release of bodily tension through physical connection. The objects branch out like the roots that once supported the original underground tunnel (Tank-gul, 땅굴) from South Korea, evoking a forgotten image of collective effort and interdependence.

The Shape of Resilience, 2025

Beneath the ground, my great-grandfather dug the underground tunnel. It was not just a military site, but a quiet act of resistance where visibility ends, survival begins, and wildness breathes. This thesis traces how hidden tunnels (Tank-gul, 땅굴)in South Korea carry memories of violence and care, revealing the urgent need for opacity in a world obsessed with transparency.

대나무 언덕 아래에, 증조부는 마을 공동체와 땅굴을 팠다.
그곳은 단순한 군사 시설이 아니라, 시야가 끝나는 지점에서 생존이 시작되고 야생성이 숨 쉬는 조용한 저항의 장소였다.

이 논문은 한국에 존재하는 개인들의 숨겨진 땅굴들을 추적하며, 그것들이 품고 있는 폭력과 돌봄의 기억을 탐구한다. 이를 통해 투명성에 집착하는 세계 속에서 불투명성이 왜 여전히, 그리고 긴급하게 필요한지를 질문한다.

Mountain Hydrangea is a native plant of Namsan, Korea. It has a unique ecological structure where “fake flowers” that attract insects coexist with “real flowers” that bear fruit. This unique structure serves as a visual metaphor for the relationship between outward appearance and inner essence- or the self we show to others and who we truly are. The intricate brass, crafted to look like real flowers, express the paradox of the showy “fake flowers”. In contrast, the delicate and cloud-like steel mesh represents the hidden “real flowers.”
The true light shines directly from within the mesh center. As if proving that the hidden inner space is the real source of light, the flower lives on as a lasting landscape through the harmony of different texture of metal and light.

It will be presented at @forwardfurniture_club during the @dutchdesignweek ✨

This work captures the deep shadows behind the bright lights of Seoul’s rapid urban development, disappearing places of everyday life, and forgotten childhood memories through light.

Cold stainless steel represents the buildings of Seoul, while the rough folds of traditional Korean silk, Oksa, express layers of time where the past and present overlap. The chain at the back symbolizes the connection of poetic values that should continue without being broken.

Winter is expressed through motifs of an inkstone, books, an oil lamp, and glasses. Together, these motifs portray a quiet landscape of learning, contemplation, and reflection.

동지는 벼루 조각과 책, 등잔, 안경의 도상을 통해 배움과 사색의 시간을 담아냅니다. 도상들은 고요하며 단단한 성찰이 이루어지는 풍경을 그려냅니다.

The uppercase ’A‘ represents the moment when people see themselves
in a new way and come face to face with their true selves.

Each work begins with an ’a‘. Through the work, we invite each viewer to find their own path from ’a‘ to ’A‘.
