While in Eindhoven for the opening of @dutchdesignweek, we went behind the scenes at @forwardfurniture_club, an initiative by @livvaisberg bringing together around a hundred designers within a shared exhibition format, located on the sixth floor of Gebouw TX, a former machinery factory. But behind this desire to reveal creative processes, one question remains. Does showing more pieces really lead to a better understanding of a designer’s approach? His work is driven by the pursuit of a balance between contemporary techniques and traditional craftsmanship. Having previously exhibited his work in New York, he is taking part in Forward Furniture for the first time. For Marcelo, this approach offers a way to bring Argentine design to an international audience by creating objects that can be taken on a plane and assembled upon arrival. a : Why do you smile like that? 라는 작은 생각이 a : Why do you smile like that?

a : A night in Seoul : A

TEATIME #03 @suri___lee 이수경 선생님과 멋진 스튜디오에서 세 번째 타임을 가졌습니다 🌷 During times of turmoil, Tang-kul (underground tunnels)—dug somewhere in the village by someone, in order to protect the vulnerable such as grain stores, children, and women, and to ensure survival—have, over generations, faded into obscurity or been erased altogether. Suri Lee visited her ancestral village in search of these tunnels and traces of her grandfather who once safeguarded them, collecting the stories of those who had passed through. This journey was, in turn, a process of seeking her own story. Following the lives of those who embroider and weave ramie is likewise an autoethnographic practice through which she writes herself into being. A designer, writer, and—one might say—a curiosity-driven traveler, Suri explores what it means to be “Korean,” connecting it to everyday spaces while continually expanding the horizons of her own practice.

On the long horizontal panels, custom embroidery tells the brand‘s story in the style of traditional Joseon folk art (Minhwa). Between the two folk art panels are ’jangseok‘, traditional metal hinges and corner pieces. Originally used to strengthen the joints of wooden furniture while adding a decorative touch, here the jangseok connects the left and right embroidered panels. This attempts to scale up traditional decorations and apply them to a modern design.
