SHOULD WE CALL A DAY OF ACTION AGAINST POLICE VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT IN JANE FINCH? The violent confrontation and detention of two Black 16-year-old students by plainclothes Toronto police officers in Jane Finch on September 23, 2026, one of whom was arrested and charged, received widespread coverage after we publicly condemned the incident. Since then, other Black youth in our community have also been targeted and assaulted by police officers and TTC special constables. We have repeatedly raised concerns about police violence, harassment, and the targeting and criminalization of Black and other racialized youth. Yet local politicians and all levels of government have remained silent about these incidents. How long are our communities expected to wait for a response? Should we organize a Day of Action Against Police Violence and Harassment in Our Communities to demand accountability, stand with our youth and families, and collectively challenge the policing, surveillance, and criminalization of our communities? You may have seen headlines about Carney’s plan to establish the DSRB, The Defence, Security and Resilience Bank. But what is this bank? It is a war bank. The first multinational bank of its kind, the DSRB’s sole purpose is to finance the defence industry. It will direct billions of dollars in public money to drum up private investment for weapons and military industries. Mayor Olivia Chow and Premier Doug Ford have both written letters of support in their bid to have the bank headquarters be hosted in Toronto. But at a time when Canadians are struggling just to pay rent and live well, the last thing we need is to be pouring billions of dollars into bombs and surveillance. This bank could be officially established literally anytime now, so this is a critical moment to fight back against it. The Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) is a multinational bank, the first of its kind, whose sole purpose is to finance the “defence” industry. It will direct billions of dollars in public money (taxpayer dollars) to drum up private investment for weapons and military industries. The bank launched at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkiye, on July 7, but is not yet operational. It could be fully operational within 12 months, unless we mobilize to stop it!
