It's a pair of achromatic covers (or just about).
I had never read any Cormac McCarthy before, but I will definitely be rectifying that! I thought this book was so artfully written, eliciting a complicated mixture of ethos, enigma, and ambiance. 5 stars.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous was also beautifully written (at parts), but didn't hit quite the same way for me. This is presented as a letter to the speaker's mother (essentially the author as speaker... the book smudges the line between memoir and tale), and unfolds in a non-linear way with memories and impressions and confidences all coming to the surface. Some of it landed for me, but for some reason I wasn't as drawn in as I thought I'd be. And so it goes. I gave it a loose 3+ stars.

This is the look of a dog who will be sorely disappointed when I have to roust him back indoors before heading off to run a couple of errands. 🌞🦮😴 by @surroundedbyscraps

2 more reading finishes for 2026. The Lloyd Alexander Chronicles of Prydain is a series I VAGUELY remember having enjoyed way back when. Honestly, I only remember having had The Black Cauldron in my bookcase as a maybe 4th or 5th grader, likely after my brother made his way through. This was a fun audio book to listen to while working in the sewing room... and I maybe now understand how @henwenpowell got her name... maybe??

Now, the Rilke collection is a whole other story. I picked up this book while J and I were in New Orleans in January. It's less than 150 pages, with translations of poems, essays, and letters by Rilke, plus essays from the translator John J.L. Mood. I didn't love it, to be honest. I do think I'll need to go back through at another time, and will certainly seek out other Rainer Maria Rilke works (definitely by different translators), but this one was mostly a slog. My brain generally has trouble with poetry, but I'll keep trying. And so it goes.

It's been a little while since I last posted... most of the photos in my camera roll lately are process shots of a project I can't yet share. That, and pictures of Oberon being stubborn.

However, a few weeks ago I returned to this knitting project after a bit of a hiatus. I'm down to just finishing the last sleeve, then weaving in ends and blocking! I may actually have this ready for autumn wear 🤗! by @surroundedbyscraps

Oh Nelly! It is rare that I actually DIScourage a book being read, but this one... it might be for some people, but was not for me, and I thought of several readerly friends who would agree (included the members of my book club who actually gave it a try). I remember very much enjoying her novel Geek Love, written years later than this, but published decades earlier (Toad was published posthumously). Anyhoo, I gave this book less than 2 stars on both Goodreads and the StoryGraph, plus wrote a review including some of why it didn't sit well with me.
Ya win some, ya lose some. But I will say it has a pretty cool cover!!

Another good listen. James Baldwin is an author I've had on my TBR list for years, but this is the first of his books I've gotten to (though a copy of Go Tell It on the Mountain has been living on my book case, too). Giovanni's Room was not quite what I expected, and combined a sweetness and angst in a complex character study. 4.25 ⭐️.
