POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Join us Saturday, November 14 at 1 p.m. for Jillmarie Murphy's "Place Precarity and the 19th Century Woman." To register, follow the link in our bio.

Throughout the long-nineteenth century, women of color, ethnic minorities, economically disadvantaged and working class women, women living in certain religious communities, and aging women often experienced marginalization and social injustice. Women scientists were also expected to take a subordinate role while working alongside men, who often received recognition for the scientific discoveries women made. “Place Precarity & the Nineteenth-Century Woman” will draw upon several rare, unpublished, and out-of-print texts composed between 1775 and 1925 that will highlight the social insecurities, economic and work-related uncertainties, and political instabilities many women faced during this period.

Each year, from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States. The observance begins in mid-September to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations.

This year’s theme, Unidos, Somos Más (“Together, We Are More”), celebrates the strength found in community and the many distinct stories that enrich our shared history.

As the month comes to a close, we’re highlighting women whose achievements in journalism, labor organizing, entertainment, law, science, and sports have helped shape American history. Their stories reflect diverse backgrounds and experiences, connected by a determination to challenge barriers and create new possibilities.

Learn about these remarkable women, whose contributions deserve recognition year-round.

Today, and every day, the Anthony Museum honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We acknowledge with respect the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca Nation), the Indigenous people on whose ancestral lands Susan B. Anthony's National Historic Landmark home now stands. Three years ago today, we were presented the Haudenosaunee (or Six Nations*) flag by members of the Haudenosaunee community to fly at the front of 17 Madison Street. We are deeply honored to have this flag at the front of Susan B. Anthony’s home, as we recognize that we are only stewards of the land on which the Anthony Museum properties sit. Suffragists deeply admired the harmony and independence of female life in Haudenosaunee tribes, mirroring that system in their own goals for the women’s right movement. We are proud to showcase the Haudenosaunee flag as an acknowledgment of the Indigenous women who influenced Anthony's work and to acknowledge the leadership Indigenous women continue to provide today.

On December 3, 1847, Frederick Douglass published the first issue of The North Star in Rochester, New York. Named for Polaris, the star that helped guide people escaping enslavement north, the newspaper carried the words shown here on its masthead as part of a longer motto.

In its pages, Douglass attacked slavery, called for emancipation, and argued for the rights and advancement of Black Americans. He also advocated for the women’s movement. After attending the 1848 women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, he used The North Star to defend women’s suffrage.

For Douglass, a newspaper was more than a record of events. The North Star carried calls for freedom and equality far beyond the city where it was printed.

This morning we announced that the Anthony Museum has partnered with RightHear to make our spaces more accessible to blind and low-vision visitors. This was a community-driven effort, the result of months of collaboration with guests who had asked for better access to our experience.

Thank you to Dr. Shirley Green, Commissioner of the Department of Recreation and Human Services for the City of Rochester, Diana Rapp Keating, Vice President of Marketing for Visit Rochester, and Xander Rohring, Director of Communications and Marketing for the Rochester Chamber of Commerce for helping us mark the occasion.

Thank you especially to Helen Kiprono, a RightHear ambassador and also founder and chair of Camp Possibilities, for helping us test our new system and spread the word about the importance of access to cultural experiences for all people.

Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton may not seem like an obvious pairing at first glance. Their careers, public personas, and paths to influence were strikingly different. Yet both spent decades challenging narrow expectations of what women could be, how they could use their voices, and what power could look like.

Remembering them together invites us to consider not only what they accomplished, but the possibilities they opened for women to define themselves, their ambitions, and their impact on their own terms.

Two unmistakable voices. Two enduring legacies.
