birthdays are hard. last year a friend gave me the advice to make it about you, your anniversary of becoming a parent. today is the first anniversary without you. there are so many things i want to do with you today. i want to go through the cast of the show Im doing on the theater’s website and tell you what everyone’s like. i want to send you the play so you can read the first few pages and then give up because plays are impossible to read and tell me you wish you could see it. i want to walk from my house to the bottom of the park on the phone with you, laughing, talking shit, reviewing movies and books, hearing you doing dishes in the background, imagining your little wonderful-smelling condo in California, the birds in the backyard. i could tell you anything. you’re dead now and i keep forgetting. the card you gave me last year is on my windowsill, with your perfect pretty handwriting and little pictures of us together glued into it. I can’t remember if I thanked you properly for it. life without you is a blasted place i don’t recognise. i just miss you and there’s nothing about it that’s good. i want to show you the fall colors in Park Slope. i want to tell you about my friends having babies, the new life im surrounded by. i want to know what work was like today. i want to know what you’re watching on TV. i want to know the new thing you remembered from the holy years that we lived under the same roof. i think the reason so many sweet things make me cry is that they remind me of what it was like to be near you. what your love felt like. how i wanted to take care of you back but i didn’t get the chance i thought i’d have. i am thinking of you in pain and it’s worse than if i was in pain. the train is still going, your stop came while we were mid-conversation, we didn’t get to say goodbye. i hear i’ll never speak to you again. can you tell me? is that true? by @susannahperkins

“I’ve had a hard time describing this play to my friends. I always end up saying [redacted], but I think that if I were to try and pithily describe this play to someone, and accurately, I would say that PRACTICE is a play about the generational curse of people who are in leadership positions in the arts, mistreating the people who are working under them. And perhaps about the relationship between artistic ambitions and a desire to hurt other people."
