“Pre-Existing Condition” Finds the Wounds That Time Cannot Close

https://frontmezzjunkies.com/2026/10/19/pre-existing-condition-finds-the-wounds-that-time-cannot-close/

Frontmezzjunkies Theatre Review: Marin Ireland’s devastating drama examines the guilt, gaslighting, and hard-won work of finding safety after abuse.

Back in early September, I was thrilled to be invited to the Canadian premiere of Marin Ireland’s Pre-Existing Condition at Toronto’s Coal Mine Theatre. I was really looking forward to seeing it in that lovely intimate space, then catching it again in New York a month later. The theatre gods, however, had other plans. They fed me a bad slice of tomato, or something equally suspicious, and I spent the Toronto opening night laying low from food poisoning, unable to leave my apartment. After that disastrous evening, TIFF and the Toronto theatre scene swallowed up every available evening, and my chance to see the play in Toronto vanished. Luckily for me, another opportunity arrived at Off-Broadway's Greenwich House Theater. That New York performance, with Phillipa Soo (Broadway’s Into the Woods; Hamilton) taking on the central role of “A.” The production features a rotating lead cast, with each actress appearing during a scheduled portion of the engagement, and Soo’s performance became my introduction to Ireland’s devastating drama about domestic abuse, self-blame, and the uncertain road toward feeling safe again. I must thank those same theatre gods for that…

Phillipa Soo, Susannah Perkins, Dael Orlandwrsmith and Greg Keller are phenomenal in @preexistingconditionplay! I saw this play in 2024 at the Connelly Theatre & it’s remarkable to see it again at the Greenwich House Theater.

The rotating cast of stars is such a brilliant way to keep this SHO going & looking forward to interviewing Susannah Flood next week with her taking the stage as A!

Don’t miss this @marinireland play directed by @mariadizzia.

Thanks for having me at the SHO! The odds were ever in mt favor sitting next to @rachelzegler 🥰

✨See you at the SHO!✨
